I have since privately received information that the lack of credit was in bad faith, and that this was a blatant and intentional ripoff. I'm not the only one disheartened by the lack of due credit.

I think it was GPT 5.6 Sol on high reasoning effort and like, one mistake all week is probably better than most humans, but it still makes me worry about all the other times it made a mistake that I didn't catch especially outside my expertise and maybe LLMs will always have some amount of this

i still encounter a nonsense response/output about once per week, although i'm a month or so behind on model releases this week's hiccup was asking it to solve a TOCTOU race that i identified, and its solution introduced a different TOCTOU race so i'd really rather a post-LLM technology

There’s a certain glib response to warnings of harm from powerful AI that is “they’ll only do that if you tell them to do it”. Which - yes. That’s my concern. Have you seen people?

even when that's the case, it's because humans made them behave that way humans chose that humans choose how much agency they have and when this agency is used to harm or otherwise break laws, it's those humans that are responsible

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
