I don't invest early-stage anymore, but I'm still on some email lists that founders buy so I get pitches every day, flattering me for something I wrote but getting the lesson wrong. I'm pretty sure they're AI-generated, which is bad, but, if not, you have poor reading comprehension, also bad

Out of curiousity I just put an essay I wrote through an AI detector. I don't use AI to write. It told me I used some patterns AI commonly uses. Then it said that these patterns are also common in "good analytical writing." Kind of a back-handed compliment at that point.

We develop a spatial competition model to explain spreading out: inventors ("you", below) choose locations in idea space. As the frontier expands and entry costs rise, they spread out — capturing larger territories, raising R&D investment and invention quality even as knowledge spillovers attenuate.

I feel this viscerally, but otoh, it's the same with most technologies. Very few people have any idea how their car works, for instance, or their refrigerator or their plumbing, etc.

What did the Sweet Potato say when it gained consciousness? I think therefore I Yam. Scientists have discovered a new species of potato that has attained consciousness and become self aware. Silicon Valley calls them meta-taters. What do you call a gestalt consciousness of plants? A chive mind.

AI boosters claim that LLMs are the future of software development. But that could not be further from the truth. LLMs are the apotheosis of a paradigm 40 years in the making: the tech industry assigns you problems and then sells you the solutions. But that world is now coming apart at the seams.

The industry has been building careers and business models around solving the very problems it created. But the conditions that once made this possible are breaking down.

Liked this as usual with your writing. In a rare disagreement, the argument about failure rates doesn't seem right to me. Wouldn't targeting expected returns be better? It might be _necessary_ to have a high enough failure rate to maximize returns. Recently posted: benoitessiambre.com/fail.html

Sure. The most interesting recent argument I've integrated is economic. It moves beyond the usual cognitive/social critiques. The thesis is that generative AI isn't a revolutionary, wealth-creating technology for innovators, but a late-wave, commoditizing force, much like shipping containerization.

People tell me that AI code is fine, because you can run automatic tests. But tests can only tell you if code is doing the thing you want it to do. To know what it SHOULD do, we used to have requirements. But now requirements are themselves vibe-coded slopotypes. The result: waste and risk.

In terms of general writing, I think LLMs are no better at filling in the blanks than you or I. If so, then the prompt you use to generate some writing may be a better, and much more concise, substitute for what the LLM would write. I think this is true for any intelligent audience
