There is evidence that Gary may have personal issues preventing him from forming meaningful relationships which are totally unconnected to his employer www.wired.com/story/tech-b...
ENGAGED IN A flirtatious conversation at a bar in Manhattan, 23-year-old Gary stood with a Guinness in hand as *he explained to a woman why he took an engineering job at Palantir,* the data analytics company cofounded by Alex Karp and Peter Thiel.
*Raking in a $250,000 salary would allow him to help pay off his parents' mounting medical bills,* he explained.
Gary wasn't met with sympathy. Medical debt, the woman told him, was "not an excuse to work somewhere like that."Gary has resorted to saying he works in Al.
"Even that gets some pretty bad responses sometimesạẠỊhe says. His Hinge profile doesn't mention his employer. And
*sometimes he makes up stories out of thin air to justify working for Palantir-like that line about the medical debt. His parents don't have any, nor are they ill.*

From my own niche: institutions of higher education should stop chasing trends, work internally to assert a set of values, and then build curriculum around those values.

When I worked at Best Buy in Lexington, I saw John Michael Montgomery twice. The first time, I sold him an absurd (to me, a broke kid) amount of camcorder batteries. The second, he brought in his camcorder for repair after it was rained on and warped when he tried to dry it with a hairdryer.

The one time I felt bad was when an Informatica marketing person came by and yelled something like "who do we thank for this party?!?" and people yelled "TECHDIRT!" instead of Informatica. Oh well. Anyway, if Salesforce wants to throw us a party too, let me know.

This is a good thread. And as well as the huge financial hit and the threat to safety, there's the way car culture erodes community. It creates a lot of people who effectively live in fearful bubbles.

Never lived in Japan. But I spent enough time in Berlin that I almost lived there (3 1/2 weeks at a time for months), and the quality of life there is vastly better than here. Noah Smith says crime is the #1 disadvantage of the U.S. I disagree; it's cars./1 www.noahpinion.blog/p/yes-americ...

“Mary could marry any man in town. She doesn’t want to. She wants George. She takes the measure of George, seeing something in him that he can’t see, and which is perhaps only partially visible to us. What Mary sees in him does not reflect any of the abortive visions George has for himself.”

There Is No Mary Problem in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its true—and profound—meaning.

Putting Mangione in a little red or blue box based on aspects of his social-media history is just an attempt to stop people from seeing how much they actually have in common. I will judge this man by his trigger fingers and not by his Twitter fingers. I don't know whether and how the class consciousness emerging in the wake of Mangione's (alleged) act of murder will survive, nor what direction it will take. But we well and truly need to stoke and build upon that class consciousness if we're going to be free, safe and, indeed, healthy.

When I was a kid, I thought the line, “I want a yacht and really that’s not a lot” from Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” was “I want a lot and really that’s not a lot,” and I think my version is better.

Can I share another gem from this piece that I think is super relevant to current discussions of GenAI? Lately I've seen more on here about how AI relies on exploited labor in the Global South for data labeling & content moderation. Selfe described this dynamic quite clearly more than 25 years ago.
"From our perspective today, of course, we can see a darker side of this dynamic. The economic engine of technology must be fueled by—and produce—not only a continuing supply of individuals who are highly literate in terms of technological knowledge, but also a ongoing supply of individuals who fail to acquire technological literacy, those who are termed 'illiterate' according to the official definition. These latter individuals provide the unskilled, low-paid labor necessary to sustain the system I have described—their work generates the surplus labor that must be continually re-invested in capital projects to produce more sophisticated technologies.
"The people labeled as 'illiterate' in connection with technology—as expected—are those with the least power to effect change in this system. They come from families who attend the poorest schools in this country and they attend schools with the highest populations of students of color. In part because of such facts, those students have less access to technology."

But Trump lucked out. The “Access Hollywood” scandal flamed bright and fast and died out just as quickly. About a half-hour after the tape was published, WikiLeaks conveniently began posting emails Russian hackers had stolen from the account of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair.
