A major US newspaper publisher is rolling out an Al-generated content farm that will use the bylines of real reporters without their consent.
But McClatchy executives initially indicated they'd like more control over how they label reporters' work.
Kathy Vetter, McClatchy's chief of staff for local news, said during the March 17 meeting that the company's general policy was that reporters who cannot revoke the use of their bylines must keep them attached to CSA-produced stories. For those who can revoke their byline, she said, McClatchy will still use their work anyway.
"We have every right to use their work," she said, according to multiple sources familiar with the meeting. "It belongs to us, and if an editor wants to go ... in there and repurpose a reporter's content, they can put their name on it."
"If they don't have the ability in their contract to remove their byline, we're going to use their name," Vetter added in response to a question. "Now, I'm not asking

Today in AI: Canada rejected the PR application of a McMaster postdoc from the Sorbonne who works in the immunology of aging because the generative AI being used to process applications (😱) entirely hallucinated her credentials. Everyone involved should be fired. archive.is/ELrCI#select...
Kémy Adé was shocked by the immigration refusal letter she received.
In rejecting her permanent residence application, the Immigration Department cited her current job duties, which included wiring and assembling control circuits, building control and robot panels, programming and troubleshooting. The department said these duties didn’t match the Canadian work experience she claimed.
Well, no, they didn’t. Adé is a post-doctoral research fellow and guest teacher at McMaster University — and those skills are not part of her repertoire. Nor are they what she submitted in her immigration application a year ago.
“I saw this language about this job description that has nothing to do with me,” said the health scientist from France, who has a PhD from Sorbonne University in the immunology of aging. “I was disoriented how this could happen.”
But a disclaimer at the bottom of the refusal letter might provide a hint.
It’s believed to be the first time that the department explicitly referred to the use of generative AI to support application processing in immigration refusals. The disclaimer also noted that all generated content was verified by an officer and that generative AI was not used to make or recommend a decision.

Good words of warning here. AI models are generally designed to read and incorporate (and, in a sense, believe) virtually everything they find online, with very few guardrails. The information can get divorced from its original source, context, & rebuttals or retractions. That's a really big problem

On this day in 1989, an armed gunman murdered 14 women at École Polytechnique de Montréal. Another ten women and four men were injured. The anniversary of the massacre is commemorated annually on Dec. 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
A black granite memorial plaque features a circular arrangement of names in white text, bordered by silver rivets. At the top center is an emblem of a bee with gears. The text reads "in memoriam" followed by two columns of names: Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, Barbara Klucznik Widajewicz. At the bottom: "6 DÉCEMBRE 1989".
