Birds fly over the rainbow... and here in Loch Oich, they were black-throated divers 😍
A grey loch with green hillside behind and a rainbow above, reflected in the water.

Small, stripy and seriously hungry 🐛 Cinnabar moth caterpillars are out and about this August, happily munching their way through ragwort before transforming into striking red-and-black moths. Have you spotted one in its caterpillar era or all grown up? 👀

Tradition should not be used as an excuse for killing wildlife. And that's why we want the Guga hunt outlawed.

Small whites mating in my garden recently. Despite the hot weather, there’s plenty of long grass & shady areas for them to hide out the intense temperatures of late. They’re doing well due to planting lots of nectar plants for them, including Buddleja, Verbena, Marjoram, Echinops a& Greater Knapweed

Nothing wrong with enjoying and sharing species which aren't rare or hard to find. Here's a Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus) that is just as beautiful as any other butterfly.

Mean number of butterflies per 1000m on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects per habitat last week. The high number on heathland comes from Silver-studded Blue (heideblauwtje, P argus), which can be very abundant. Overall Meadow Brown (bruin zandoogje, M jurtina) was the most abundant species.

New roof fitted today to a Tawny Owl box that I put up for a customer a couple of years ago, after having a chunk of the roof removed by a very determined squirrel! This nest was used last year and one chick successfully fledged. Today’s result: Joel - 1 | Squirrels - 0! 😁
