20 Sept 2026 960 years ago a largely forgotten, but pivotal battle took place in the village of Gate Fulford, 2 miles south of #York. #history #Vikings #Saxons

Harald Hardrada, of Norway, who had laid claim to the English throne, sailed with his army, up the Ouse to Riccall, 10 miles south of York. Harald was supported by Tostig Godwinson, and allies from Orkney.
On 20th September, they travelled back to Fulford and landed at Fordland, a very marshy area beside Germany Beck on the east bank of the Ouse.
The northern Earls, Morcar and Edwin, with their smaller army, engaged battle and were defeated by Harald's army.
York surrendered under the promise that the city would not be forcibly entered.
Hostages were taken and removed to Stamford Bridge where there was a second battle, 5 days later, in which the Saxons were successful.
In 1064 William of Normandy, who also laid claim to the English throne, met with Harold Godwinson, the Earl of Wessex. Harold took the crown in January 1066 and it is believed William took this as justification for the much more famous Battle of Hastings on 14th October that year, 280 miles south, a long march for exhausted foot soldiers.
One battle, largely forgotten, may have changed the last 960 years of English history.
And is it unreasonable to suggest that Harald and William were in contact, possibly a "cunning plan?"

Aug 5 2005 Joy showed me a photo of a blade of grass. Opened up to see masses of insect eggs. A few days later took this with my basic Olympus point & shoot. I was HOOKED! How beautiful is a Bee's face? I didn't know,but many books, much learning and more, better? cameras later....
