Amongst all the hideousness and inhumanity of Jenrick’s ‘let’s shoot migrants’ policy, there’s the idea that if they know they might be shot they will stop crossing. Newsflash: they already know they’re risking their lives.

I suspect it may be an attempt to challenge expectations that an encyclopedia focused on women and marginalised groups shouldn't have that gravitas and authority associated with Latin, or something like that.

Toksvig is a humanist, so I wouldn't say she's doing it specifically for Christian connotations. Other connotations, I'd certainly hope not. But then I'm biased, my instinct is to enjoy all languages rather than see any as *inherently* problematic.

I don't know, I don't think there's a language that ticks all boxes of neutrality, widespread familiarity, lack of problematic historical baggage, euphony and memorability. Wikipedia mixing Hawaiian and Greek was maybe a good compromise.

I suppose "rival" may be better and making headlines and gaining traction though - I just hope that's not how it ends up working in practice.

I'm not a fan of the zero-sum "rival" framing. Wikipedia certainly has its blind spots - but to my mind it represents the best of human co-operation. Its epistemic rigour contributed to my deconstruction from evangelicalism when younger. Might Mappa Mundi not instead be a corrective supplement?

Okay, so Reform is now actively advocating for the armed forces to murder unarmed civilians as official policy. At what point does the media at large stop treating these people as anything but fascistic far right thugs who under any normal functioning system would be condemned as extremists.

Finally realised what tech companies insisting 'you need to suffer some hurt right now to enjoy a glorious future' reminded me of
Tech CEO speaking on stage about AI, gesturing with a small remote while colorful, scattered light points form a network-like pattern behind him, illustrating an interview about accepting some risks for the benefits of artificial intelligence.Interview excerpt with two highlighted passages: a red highlight likening A.I. to surgery—"they've got to hurt you first...to save you"—and an orange highlight stating "over the next several years we have to unfortunately use fossil fuels" before transitioning to sustainable energy."Some of you may die, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make" — Lord Farquaad smirking between two armored knights, a meme mocking callous leadership.

Yet again, Labour showing itself to be the single most racist and hostile anti-asylum government in living memory. It can take decades, if ever, for refugees to be safe returning to countries they fled, and that's when those countries are stable which Syria is not www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This line of thought seems to imply that 1. Recent successes were achieved only because of Polanski 2. Every other Green is incapable of similar success as leader 3. Successful leaders shouldn't be challenged even to fix serious moral flaws in party All of which I'd question.

At any rate I won't be doing any more canvassing in Holborn and St Pancras. The UK desperately needs a party that can put pressure on Labour to move the Overton Window towards egalitarianism, but in order for that to work that party has to itself be egalitarian.

The Times - which has v much joined in the rightwing clamour to reduce immigration - now reporting that Mahmood’s “success” has cost the economy £4- to £7Bn. Would they like to now honestly confirm that fewer people = less spending power for all. There’s a high price to pay for this nasty obsession.
Patrick Maguire
Chief Political Commentator Oliver Wright Policy Editor

Falling migration numbers could cost the chancellor as much as £7bn in fiscal headroom as he writes his first budget, The Times has been told.
Government insiders believe that John Healey, who already faced an uphill battle to balance the books next month, is likely to have an even bigger challenge after immigration undershot projections from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).
The Institute for Fiscal Studies think tank estimated last month that the success of Shabana
Mahmood's
reforms, which have cut net migration to the low hundreds of thousands, could cost Healey some £4bn.
