Professor Harold Hill awakens to find he’s a captive in a small Midwestern town. The tight-lipped, insular residents call it River City. Who are the prisoners? Who are the wardens? Patrick McGoohan is THE MUSIC MAN. With: Leo McKern as the Mayor and Buddy Hackett as Rover
We see Prof. Harold Hill from the back as he enters the town of River City in the 1962 movie The Music Man.

In my opinion, the right way to write Lois Lane is just “Philip Marlowe’s boyfriend is Superman”.

Last year it was a torrential rainstorm, this year it’s new puppies, but fate continues to bar me from the Drive-In Super Monster-Rama. You must go in my stead. Tell them I’ll see them next year!

Unironically the best thing ever to be made for television, possibly the best piece of dramatic art that isn’t weirdly canonized and thus unjudgeable like Shakespeare or Chekov. NGL I’m kinda mad it was ranked lower than Mad Men and Game of Thrones.

I think part of this is it is not designed to binge - watching four episodes back to back is watching a lot of the same stuff (either narrative or structural stuff) and not getting as many satisfying beginnings and endings as you might with a more contemporary show.

in my talk today, as an example of the strange things you can do in comics given their sequential but also spatial/simultaneous nature, I included this gonzo panel from 1950s Batman, which I just love in all its weirdness! Yes, I have more intentionally clever examples, but something about this...
part of a page from a batman comic. In one panel, batman leaps from off panel onto a diving board, the motion lines of his rebound travel across to another panel, where we see him finish his leap and crash into the crooks to save the day

Cronenberg-ass Waffle
A malformed belgian waffle that has both sharp and organic looking structures. It is the waffle that the space jockey would eat for breakfast on the giant H.R. Giger designed spaceship from ALIEN (1979). Despite appearances it was delicious.

We got a puppy cam so we could see when the puppies wake up, but the side effect is that I now have a button I can press on my phone at work that is more or less guaranteed to show me live video of a sleeping puppy. Friends my will has never been so tested.

I always like “Humans are super-abstract math monsters that don’t understand real feelings” is an underused Sci-Fi thing: “Jones can instantly tell you how many eggs are in these ten crates of 1 dozen each, but his art is all about mating and weird rhythmic noises with numerical tonal relationships”

Man a lot of Billy Joel songs are just grumpy old man grievances. I should record an iconic piano rocker about the trash trucks being too loud in the morning.
Cover of a Billy Joel single where he’s kinda passive aggressive about post-Beatles popular music trends. He also recorded two (2) singles about how he wishes his mom would complain about his life less. My garbage truck hassles jam is going to number one with a bullet.

Lukewarm take: I feel a lot of pessimism about the present is built on not realizing just how bad the past was. Like if you just read a book about poverty in a first-world country in the 1950s it's staggeringly worse than now.

The quirky shops that boosted Lloyd Center are trying it again at Pioneer Place
Those planning to relocate this August include a comic book shop, lego store, magic theater and one of the mall’s annual holiday markets.

Day two of new puppies and I literally cannot imagine having a life that isn’t just a marathon of chaos and constraints ever again.
Two adorable puppies. They are tiny tornadoes of biting, pooping confusion that demand more or less constant and complete attention. Their names are “Noodles” and “Sprout”.
