That’s what I am saying - if you only had the industry part, it would change the dynamic a lot. Or if it was industry funded research labs only - same idea

I’m sure they would cite how in Europe people often do PhDs with industry partnerships. The problem is, in isolation that model limits the uptake of new approaches

When I explain to peeps how much we do in research labs for how few $$, they simply don’t believe me. I once explained it to a famous person from Pixar, he looked me square in the eye and said “You mean all the cancer, vision, and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be %#ing kidding me!”

I’ll also hit the limit of 6 submissions in a year 😢

Yes - I have like 10 ongoing projects 🥴 only half have funding directly - the other half are through pilot funds

You will have 6 NIH grants, or submissions? Can people in your group even have that many projects??

I have been pretty quiet lately online, but I’m very much looking forward to reengaging with the community here and sharing all of the amazing work in our lab 🙏🏼

We also had grants triaged, not discussed, and papers which were rejected. This is life. We learn, we adapt and we always strive to be better.

We have been fortunate to be supported by several sources. A T32, an R00, internal pilots and awards, and the Boettcher foundation. We have other irons in the fire, but in these tough times you take everything you can get!

We’re officially into July! Hard to believe it’s been 2 years at @cuanschutz.bsky.social and @cu-bmg.bsky.social A lot has happened - and I am so grateful to my lab who has made coming into work each day such a treat. Kudos to them for the new lab photo design, too. Some highlights 👇🏻

A tomahawk missile costs the taxpayers the same amount of money as one five-year major NIH research grant. Remember that every time they tell us one of those missed the target, blew up paintings of enemy aircraft or tanks, or was the fifth and unnecessary hit on the same target.

The acknowledgements section speaks to considerable privilege. Without a senior author, he and his classmate were provided with lab space, purified protein, and technical help. Their paper was communicated to PNAS. I doubt many undergraduate researchers have received comparable support. 31/n

With news that NIH grant success rates are now below 5%, consider the effort that goes into one of these grants (apart from you, who submitted 60 AI-written grants)- why would you put in that much effort knowing your chances are only slightly better than winning a lottery? 1/

So: In 2017, Congress made this happen: NIH: Proposed 22% cut --> 9% increase NSF: Proposed 11% cut --> 4% increase NOAA: Proposed 16% cut --> 4% increase Obviously, 2025 is not 2017. A lot is diff now. But still: 💰 Congress, not WH, sets budgets. 📞 Public support & calls to Congress matter.
