Germans know perfectly well who this is. Putin invited former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder to his home for his birthday after learning from media reports that Schröder was in Moscow, the Kremlin says. The Kremlin referred to the former German leader as Putin’s “old friend.” #Russia

Sure, it borders on many relevant fields of research (on links between transnational experiences and cosmopolitan views etc). But I think it's deeply misguided in confounding all kinds of factors into a "tribalist" vision of political divides (see also sect. 3 here: direct.mit.edu/ecps/article... )

It was always clear that David Goodhart's fairy tale of a struggle between rootless cosmopolitans and down-to-earth conservatives ("Anywheres vs Somewheres") was not influential because it was accurate, but because it confirmed the prejudices of right-leaning commentators. Now we have the evidence:

The Road to Nowhere: Being Rooted in a Region Does Little to Predict Support for Populist Parties or Opposition to Migration and Social Change
In his influential book The road to somewhere David Goodhart claims that a split between a majority of people who are rooted in particular places or groups (the “Somewheres”) and a minority of people...

Finally a proper working paper for this study that produced one of the most astounding figures I've ever seen. Basically economics is different from every other field, empirically. This paper looks at the concentration of university affiliations for award winners. www.nber.org/papers/w35875
Figure 2 from the paper: institutional concentration of university affiliation at time of award correlated with institutional concentration of phd granting university. Economics is the most concentrated of any field.
