Are there hard boundaries or soft gradients of function between sensory and #working-memory activation in frontal cortex? We show evidence for meso-scale (~1cm) cortical gradients in several frontal ROIs in this bioRxiv preprint. Thread 1/6 #neuroscience #neuroskyence doi.org/10.64898/202...
Process diagram for individual subject ROI gradient vs. boundary model comparison. A) Individual subject p-value map of all visual conditions (WM and SMC) against fixation. The black outline represents the
probabilistic search space for the preSMA ROI while the white outline represents the p<.01 ROI inside the search space for this subject. B) The ROI from A is flattened and the difference of the unsmoothed T-statistics for the WM against SMC and SMC against fixation contrasts are projected. The X-axis is aligned with the axis of greatest change. Gray horizontal gridlines form slices that are 2.2mm in height. C) Data from a single slice is collapsed into 1D, then gradient and boundary models are fit to the data. This is repeated for each slice.

My first first co-author paper! Big thank you to @vaibhavtripathi.bsky.social, Joe McGuire, and @profsomers.bsky.social. Cool to take a deeper look at how different WM networks interact at resting state and during WM tasks, and learned a lot of new analysis techniques along the way.

So glad to see this paper come out. Amazingly led by @tom-poss.bsky.social. Auditory working memory reconfigures task connectivity utilizing more supramodal and visual regions. Had a great time working on this data collection, the task design was challenging but learnt so many things in the process.

By pooling extensive resting-state and task data, we were able to triple the amount of data available for analysis within each individual, enabling precise mapping of five higher-order association networks within the thalamus. (6/13)

Amazing work led by Jingnan! Pooling in task and rest data can give us a lot of discovery potential like discovering hard to find networks in the thalamus (bulk of my postdoc work with Randy). Task data can be used to define networks and activations from left out runs can be investigated. Cool work!
