This was great
Screenshot of text which reads, "When Metaphors Stop Being Metaphors

But modern chatbots do something to get from a user’s language-based input to a linguistically well-formed output (response). The processes within that arc are increasingly referred to as “reasoning”, a word that carries connotations of human cognition, even though computationally-grounded terminology such as “goal-based processing” might be more appropriate. Naming conventions often draw from human experience: Biology research gives us “hitchhiking” genes, graphical modeling work gives us “belief” propagation. The etymology of “invasive” plants and parasite “hosts” documents how the earlier meanings of these terms were expanded as we applied them outside of human social life. Etc.

Such metaphors can be genuinely useful: They light up new ways of understanding phenomena, and provide high-level intuitions about scientific mechanisms that are otherwise unnamed. They help us appeal to things that people are deeply familiar with, in order to “give a sense” of something they’re not familiar with. Yet as these terms are absorbed into technical jargon, the work of rigorously interrogating such metaphors — testing their applicability, elaborating on them, discharging them, adjusting them, etc. — is rarely done [6]."

From Serena Jampel, one of the writing tutors I worked with at Harvard on the difference between the human tutor and AI and how a writing tutor can help a student find their voice. Lots of wisdom and also this truth: "the more you use it, the more you use it" www.harvardmagazine.com/commentary/h...
And that was another remarkable feature of the Writing Center. Sometimes students would resist my feedback, insisting that their structure would make sense once they added a bit more reasoning. In doing so, they were often pushed to articulate their thinking more clearly, and to affirm their confidence in their position.

An LLM cannot do that, because it does not have its own opinions or thoughts. It is only trained to engage the user: the more you use it, the more you use it. That’s actually the antithesis of writing instruction, which aims to cultivate independent thought.

This 🧵 will have readings that I assign in my Sociology of AI class.
A flyer for the class Sociology of AI

The overview says: SOC 3900 Sociology of AI uses a sociological lens to study what is popularly called "artificial intelligence." In this class students will learn about cutting edge research examining the origins, impacts, and struggles over the broad set of technologies and practices involving AI. Through an international focus, this class will cover numerous topics related to AI, including: gig work, algorithmic bias, data colonialism, resource extraction, digital labor, data center studies, and environmental and climate effects. This class will primarily focus on sociological research, but will also include scholarship from geography, history, international studies, and environmental studies, as well as other social scientific and humanistic disciplines. No prior knowledge of AI is required for this class

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

AI doom or not, something has shifted with AI recently. The guardrails that kept AI sitting in a chatbox are gone, the models are better, there's more compute. AI agents are everywhere. They are annoying as hell. IMO the situation is going to get much worse www.404media.co/theres-a-100...

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

At the center of my message to faculty yesterday was: 1.) We may not be adequately prepared for how angry students are about tech. 2.) They are not all angry for the same reasons. 3.) Being angry at it doesn’t mean they aren’t using it. The sense of entrapment fuels the anger.

Scientists using LLMs will ‘do more, less well’, modelling study predicts
Research suggests that the combination of incentives to publish and the use of large language models will lead to more papers, but they will be less refined.

The part the productivity pitch skips: AI made the writing cheap and the checking expensive, and the checking is what got dumped on you. Twenty of seventy isn't a labor saving, it's a labor transfer from the authors who used it to the reviewers who have to catch it, for free.
