People unfamiliar with Austen think her romantic heroes are unrealistically dashing and charming, but that's actually the villains. The romantic heroes in Austen are usually just consistent, kind, steadfast, and at least 50% likely to be a practicing member of the clergy

The failure to investigate Savile properly, even after his death, still reeks of a cover-up. Why did Edwina Currie let him have keys to Broadmoor? I mean, what is the rationale for allowing a private citizen free midnight access to a mental hospital? Let alone the most secure one in the country.

I spent a while in Leeds recently. A friend there used to drink in a pub across from Jimmy’s, the big hospital. One night a nurse there told him Jimmy Savile was a necrophiliac, but not as a bombshell revelation. More like it was something everybody knew. Something no-one would pursue either.

Do you think they were scared of getting shot at too? I’m a non-expert in a gun-free country, but a lot of the US seems to have a yearning for catastrophic political violence.

“You played along with a genocide” will haunt every testimonial, every after-dinner banter gig, every podcast comment section, and quite a few of their low-key neighbourhood pints. I hope the people who love them are being really clear about the consequences of what they’re considering.
