I‘m reading Peter Robinson and this came up. He may go on to contradict it, but the lovely fact is that mining communities have traditionally been surprisingly pro-gay. The film Pride is great on this (with an astonishingly good performance by Andrew Scott) but I experienced it in my own life too.

The dactyl (dactylos in Greek) is named after the finger, because the finger has one long and two short bones. So when Stephen thinks “Two dactyls” he is picturing two fingers. It’s a rude gesture (of farewell?) to or from his friend Buck.
