Sometimes I marvel at the degree to which tech bros fundamentally don’t understand teaching & learning. It’s grounded on give & take. Teacher & student learning from each other as they go—progressing towards knowledge. You can’t teach from a script. Well…you can. But that’s not really teaching.

Remember ICE's reach is at stake in a bunch of ways in November. boltsmag.org/prosecutor-a...
When Danny Tarkenton learned that federal agents had shot and killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis last winter, she felt concerned that her local officials would not push back should similar violence unfold in her own backyard in Spokane, Washington. “That’s why I ran to protect my community,” she told Bolts. “We can sue the agents under state crimes.”

Tarkenton is now running for chief prosecutor of Spokane County, challenging a Republican incumbent who opposes his state’s sanctuary protections. She is among the many candidates for prosecutor or sheriff this fall who say they got in to push back against President Trump’s mass deportations agenda. The challenger to an upstate New York sheriff says he wants to “kick ICE out”; in North Carolina, another challenger is accusing the sheriff’s office of racial profiling.

"I was quite impressed with the civics lesson Dr. El-Sayed put on when an attendee named Tommy asked him to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. Dr. El-Sayed has been the target of some truly despicable Islamophobia, including from the president, who recently called him a "jihadist." What I like about this clip is that Dr. El-Sayed does not apologize for being Muslim, nor accept Tommy's framing that his Muslim faith makes him inherently distrustful or unAmerican. Instead, Dr. El-Sayed reveals the bad faith question for what it is. At the same time, he engages the questioner in way that allows Tommy to demonstrate that he's either ignorant of the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom to all (and the 14th's guarantee of equal protection), and therefore out of his depth, and/or that Tommy simply has no interest in respecting the foundational rule of law the Constitution and the Bill of Rights provides.

The other bit of elegance in Dr. El-Sayed's rhetorical choices is that he makes this point in a way that's clearly understandable to everyone witnessing this interaction and its subtext. Dr. El-Sayed would have been accurate if he'd said the question was Islamophobic. But right wing media has found extraordinary success in treating the identification and naming of bigotry as a form of unjust victimization unto itself, in which merely accurately identifying something or someone as racist, sexist, homophobic, Islamophobic, etc, becomes a bigger and more objectionable offense than saying or doing the racist, sexist, homophobic or Islamophobic thing. When this happens, it's usually accompanied by rebranding the act of identifying hateful speech as "name-calling." Dr. El-Sayed neatly sidesteps all of that by allowing Tommy to show the audience his own ass rather than telling the audience that Tommy is showing his ass.

“More than 100 elected officials have joined me in calling on parking lot and garage owners across New York City: Don’t give ICE a place to operate. Don’t rent to them. Tell them they’re not welcome.

Last week, ICE agents shot Oscar Belgal in the neck in Marble Hill while his 5-year-old son sat in the car. They had been staging nearby in a private parking lot.

Our city laws keep ICE off public property. Now, we’re calling on private property owners to do the same. One garage on Morton Street already removed ICE vehicles after neighbors spoke out. Every owner has that power.”
