🧵 I’ll be honest with you, and no disrespect, but I kind of found both these (intelligent, caring, thoughtful men) to be rather... boring 🥱. Not just because they happen to be old and white men, but also they just, I don't know. seemed boring and love talking to themselves etc. you know?

must be some interesting discussions around dinner tables this week. Or parents talking with each other as they fall asleep. "hun it's really not all men, you know?" or, "it's not ALL fraternities! Def not the one I belong to! and/or Not the one our son belongs to!!" "it's NOTTT!!!!" okay.

I worked on a study about online nonconsensual image sharing. We were shocked by how many women found their images on 8chan forums where men posted challenges to each other like, “Find her workplace and get her fired,” or, “Get a nude photo of one of your girlfriend’s friends.”

This new generation of campus sexual violence activists understand solidarity and community care. My inbox is full of emails from young survivors checking in on *me* in light of the Cornell story. And I know they’re checking in on each other too. They’re in it for the long haul.

This was YESTERDAY—September 29, 2026. The entire Republican party is in the Chi Phi group chat. This is effectively an administration-led event. To even allow Brand in the building is absurd. To laugh at his rape joke? Chilling. www.thecut.com/article/russ...
Photo of Russell Brand in New York Magazine.

“Dr. Oz introduced Brand onstage by saying, ‘Russell Brand was backstage hugging the secretary of Agriculture. But here he is …’ Brand replied, ‘She initiated that contact! I should make clear, doctor.’ Several women have credibly accused Brand of sexual assault over the years — he has denied all allegations of ‘nonconsensual activity’ but admitted to having what he described as “consensual” sex with a 16-year-old girl when he was 30. Onstage, Dr. Oz responded to the joke with a loud ‘Ha!’”

Cornell, LSU, the Burnerverse, Clavicular…just one week. Men are putting their impunity and cruelty on display so brazenly. Humiliating/punishing women has always gone on, but now rape is networked, scalable, monetized. Our systems aren’t failing, tho, they’re doing what they are designed to do.

I have strong opinions about "the Greek system," having grown up nearby "fraternity row" (a street with lots of fraternities) in the town of a large university. I also had friends who joined sororities, and heard about focus on status, appearance, pressure toward regressive gender stereotypes.

There's an interview with Jane Doe's lawyer, where he describes that she is from a small town, she's not a "legacy" admit, attending Cornell was her dream, and a significant expense for her family. After the rapes, she wanted to return home to heal and her parents requested a refund of the fees.

There's something about hearing people refer to the rapists at Cornell as "boys" that hits me the wrong way. To my knowledge, they were all 18 or older at the time they committed the heinous crimes. They were men at the time. They are men today. They will be tried as adults.

In this moment, I hope all of us are thinking about how to support the survivors who are demanding more. College campuses are often the source of social change. The students find optimism in the places the rest of us are cynical. And they will be more powerful if we stand in solidarity with them.

For every story like the Cornell gang rape, there are thousands more that couldn’t make it into the light. I wrote about a few dozen of them at one university in On the Wrong Side. The university’s treatment of survivors is eerily similar to what Jane Doe at Cornell experienced.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

Do I think men who gang-rape a women should serve prison time for rape (which in NY State is 3-7 years in prison and then being listed on a sex-offender registry for life)? Yes. Is this a failure of their parents? No. well, maybe... No Is this a failure of society where POTUS is a rapist? Yes.

well, this is interesting. Another chart from the article linked below. incredibly wide (and growing) discrepancy between Republicans and Democrats. I wonder if they actually perceive society differently, or perceive the term "feminine" differently (with republicans villifying the term).
chart entitled, "Almost 80% of Republican men believe that society as a whole has become too soft and feminine."

Shows this percent from 2011-2024, for four categories: Rep men, Rep women, Dem men, Dem women. Over time, trend shows an increase in % Republicans who believe this (2024 value: 79% of Rep men, 67% of Rep women), and a decrease in Democrats who believe this (2024 value: 14% of Dem women, 20% of Dem men).

One of the many fucked up things about the “future potential” argument in not holding rapists accountable, is that statistically, rape has one of the highest rates of recidivism of violent crime. Literally no one has a higher statistical likelihood of committing rape than someone who has already.
