Protesters say RNLI shouldn’t rescue ‘migrants’. But on the water, how do you tell a migrant from a local fisherman or day-tripper? You don’t. You save anyone in distress. I believe RNLI crews were even standing by to assist the protesters in the water if needed.

The part that gets me is: “she failed her 11+ exams but despite this went on to study law”. Unless I’m missing something, I didn’t realise 11+ results carried that much weight, or had any direct bearing on getting into university years later.

The defence that “lots of people clicked on the stories” is a cheap from professionals. It means all the highfaluting stuff about principles and public interest is a veneer. You don’t have ethics if you don’t distinguish between public interest and what the public is interested in.
