REGISTRATION IS OPEN for my new course, Black Feminist (Insurgent) Politics, the intro course for my new writing and learning institute, Invisible Ink, building on my debut book Black Women Taught Us. ✨ Oct 5 – Nov 4, 2026 via Zoom Registration closes Sept. 25th Enroll: coloredconvos.com/courses
Cover image for the course. BLACK FEMINIST INSURGENT POLITICS. DATES OCTOBER 6 THRU NOVEMBER 4TH, INSTRUCTORS: JENN M JACKSON AND GUESTS, LECTURES ON MONDAYS AND DISCUSSIONS ON Wednesdays Cover of the book Black Women Taught Us in hues of purple and redThis seminar critically examines key issues, assumptions, and debates in contemporary, post-civil rights Black Feminist thought, action, and behavior. As such, we will understand that Black Feminism is global and diasporic. We will begin with a survey and broad analysis of Black Feminist history and origins. We will pay particular attention to how Black Feminists make use of standpoint theory, Black nationalism, Black liberalism, liberal feminism, and radical feminist thought. We will also investigate the simultaneity of race, gender, class, and sexual oppression and its relationship to power. This means that we will draw connections between Black Feminist models and contemporary queer and trans politics. In this course, we will also focus on Black feminist understandings of intersectionality, the history of this analytical frame, and how this framework has contributed to today’s politics.

A book that says everyone is racist if they think racist thoughts is not honoring the work of our ancestors and elders. And, it certainly won't get us any freer. At many elite universities, administrators are making $800k+ per year and chancellors/presidents are making over a million dollars. This all while adjunct professors are making so little that they qualify for food stamps. Higher education has a problem.

I am ELATED to share this article I have been writing since 2015. I was a graduate student at UChicago while organizers fought against the closures of schools across Chicago. I theorize how Black Death emerges within neoliberalism. Available at Journal of Urban Affairs. doi.org/10.1080/0735...
ABSTRACT
On August 17, 2015, 12 Black organizers launched a hunger strike to keep Walter Dyett High School open in Chicago’s historically Black Bronzeville neighborhood. It proceeded for 34 days until organizers surmised that their deaths would not be deemed significant to their political leaders. Considering this outcome, this article asks: how does Black Death emerge in a neoliberal city? I argue that the deaths of Black people—especially the poor—are inherent to the neoliberal systems within which many Black residents live. Moreover, I argue that Black Death operates not as a subtext for the struggling infrastructures and state-based frameworks in densely populated metropolitan areas but instead as an ever-present reality of the neoliberal city. I place the Dyett hunger strike in context with the 1995 heat wave in Chicago and the broader history of machine politics in the city. By theorizing Black Death in the neoliberal city, I offer a critical theoretical contribution to the neoliberal urban politics and policy literature. I posit that Black Death rarely moves governments toward restorative action to redress economic and social disparities in Black and poor communities. Rather, it is often Black and poor people themselves who resist the neoliberal turn.
