interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

I understand that paywalls are annoying, but the grim reality for everything right now, is if you want something to exist, you have to put money towards it. Every creative person is having their life's work hoovered up by AI companies. Layoffs never end. Private equity keeps making things worse.

I find it striking that some of the loudest opponents of DEI and race-conscious affirmative action in higher education now demand what amounts to affirmative action for conservative and far-right political viewpoints—often under the banner of “intellectual diversity.”

People often ask me, "How is it being in Ohio?" knowing the attacks on higher education are acute here. But the fact is, nowhere is safe. Here's a story about senseless and devastating budget cuts in Minnesota. There is no political party that seriously defends higher education in the U.S. today.

Always funny when ostensible liberals are like "You see, this postcolonial conflict is actually very nuanced and complex, because what makes it so very unique is that the majority ethnic group doesn't want to share power with the minority ethnic groups." Oh wow, I didn't know that, that's wild man.

"The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop." Straight words in the current issue of Science. www.science.org/content/blog...
From Derek Lowe in the latest issue of Science: "The Trump administration hates academic science funding, full stop. They hate where that money goes, and they hate who it goes to. They want to keep all that money for themselves, to hand out to favored cronies who can help them get elected and to steer yet more money and more power back into their hands.

That’s it. That’s the story. They are naturally not putting it in those words, but instead talking about “gold standard science” and the “reproducibility crisis” and funding “bold inquiry” for “transformational breakthroughs”. This is all bullshit, and it’s important to realize that.
