Sitting in a barbershop shortly before wrapping up this column, I decide to ask the person cutting my hair what springs to mind when I mention Bradford.

“Brad Bradford,” she repeats, looking slightly lost. “Wasn’t he super into bike lanes? But I might be getting him mixed up with this guy who was ranting about things, very reactionary.”

We go through everyone she might be thinking of until it becomes clear: she’s getting Brad Bradford mixed up with Brad Bradford. “Maybe,” she says, “he can decide which Brad Bradford he wants to be.”

To be honest most Ontarians simply don't care, so complete is the dehumanisation of the poor: If you’re treading water on welfare in Doug Ford’s Ontario, you’re slowly sinking archive.ph/NwvnO
There are awfully big numbers in the $244-billion budget that Doug Ford’s Tories pushed into law this week, over public objections.

But here’s one awful budget number that got almost no public attention:

Basic welfare rates in Canada’s richest province are stuck at a rock bottom $733 monthly. No news there.

That number hasn’t changed ever since Ford’s Progressive Conservatives took power in 2018. That’s when they decided the poor didn’t much vote or count for much.

Another example of the cost to society of private car ownership. This railroad signal has been saved by the guard rail, but will require thousands of dollars in repairs. Crashes like this are repeated hundreds of times per day, costing society millions of dollars.
The scene after a person in a car has crashed into signs and a guard rail around a railroad crossing signal. The car is gone and the guard rail appears to have done it's job. Now the signs and guard rail need to be replaced.

The safe systems pyramid for road safety. From bottom (most impactful) to top:
1. Socioeconomic factors, e.g. affordable housing near transit, zoning reform
2. Built environment, e.g. roundabouts, curb extensions, raised crosswalks, sidewalks, bikeways
3. Latent safety measures, e.g. signal timing, leading pedestrian intervals, air bags, automated emergency braking
4. Active measures, e.g. signals and signs, in-vehicle collision warnings, seatbelts, helmets
5. Education, e.g. driver education campaigns, slow down campaigns

Chow is pushing for larger signage and changing Toronto’s program so that once a driver is fined for speeding the first time, they cannot be fined again for seven days. It gives drivers an opportunity to receive their fine in the mail and become aware of the camera’s location.
