School people: We're about a month away from SCOTUS deliberations in St. Mary's v. Roy. It's a big deal: Private schools want to take public money but keep their "right" to discriminate against LGBTQ families. They built their case on a bogus history, so we filed a brief telling the real story:

And "cohabiting partners", I'm pretty sure are parenting in the same household. This is a wild interview before you get to what he's selling.
Ian: Students who don’t have the privilege of growing up in a two-parent household aren’t destined for failure. In decades of working with young people, I’ve seen many who broke the cycle of poverty, and I’ve found that they tend to share a sense of agency, a belief that they can shape their own lives. But that doesn’t come from simply pulling themselves up by their bootstraps. It’s built on what I call the four FREE pillars: family, religion, education, and entrepreneurship. This summer, we released the “Agency Curriculum” to help students build that agency. Over the past year, our AEI team worked with public, private, and parochial educators to develop and pilot 30 lessons for teachers, homeschoolers, parents, clergy, and community leaders.

Rick: You run Vertex Partnership Academies in the Bronx, where the school motto is, “There are no victims in our school, only architects of their own lives.” Why that message?

The expert again: "Our data can’t pinpoint the cause; we can only establish correlation. Two-parent homes seem to offer kids unique benefits." Let us revisit their definition of “nonintact households" which includes stepparents, who are, I'm pretty, sure married and parenting in the same house.

Jenn Borgioli Binis @jennbinis.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Results: "Kids in nonintact families were 13% less likely to earn A’s and B’s, 47% more likely to have their parents contacted ... and more than twice as likely to be depressed. In fact, family structure predicted these outcomes more strongly than race or poverty did."

Clicked out of curiosity. "We compared kids in “intact” families, where the biological or adoptive parents are married, with their peers in “nonintact households,” which includes being raised by stepparents, cohabiting partners, single parents, or foster/kinship care.

It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

Someone asked me if Braver Angels was a project by liberals to "infiltrate" Republican groups and I think I chuckled because the thought hadn't occurred to me. But also, Cox is involved in BA and I'm now wondering if he's using the group to support his goals. (Maybe I am? I don't think so?)

#PairedTexts 1. Why Schools Need a Phonics-Style Reckoning for Math by Matt Yglesias, not a math teacher. (www.the74million.org/article/why-...) 2. Emily Hanford's Story Was Basically Wrong by Michael Pershan, a math teacher. (pershmail.substack.com/p/emily-hanf...)
At this point, everyone who cares about education policy at all has probably listened to Emily Hanford’s “Sold a Story” podcast series, or pretends to have, and is aware that there is a correct way to teach children to read and also a different way that dominated education schools for a generation. There are now many state- and city-level pushes to institute correct instructional practices grounded in “the science of reading,” and the main question is about how declarative policies relate to actual practice rather than what the practice should look like. The Story is Systems, Not Ideas
Hanford’s series assigns a tremendous amount of power to a specific idea. If only!

If there was just one core belief shaping bad teaching, there would be such an easy, obvious path forward. You’d have to change people’s minds. You could mandate trainings. You could ban antiquated beliefs from education schools. You could pass laws requiring teachers to go through good-belief training.

But, alas, none of that will work.

(Also, the essay is a very clear sign that Yglesias is very, very online. I've read publishing writings by self-identified progressive educators that make nearly all of the claims he writes about. But also, they're just that - essays by self-identified progressives with a particular agenda.)

I have been forced to use Facebook for reasons that sound silly when I say them aloud, but it means I see all sorts of things I would never seek out. Things like this. Which was posted fairly recently by a reading advocacy group and .... what on earth is the point of this.
Rumor has it Lucy Calkins was spotted at a Reading League conference a few months ago. We’re hoping she was there to genuinely learn about the Science of Reading — not just hunt for a phonics patch to slap onto her Balanced Literacy program.
We welcome anyone willing to learn. Was anybody in the room with her? Did she ask good questions? Fingers crossed. 🤞

Gotcha! I think part of it is that, when it comes to education, a lot of progressives are pretty firmly in the "burn it down" camp. It's hard to find common ground when one person wants to wield and a sledgehammer and the another is trying to build scaffolding.

This was only a matter of time. In a very real way, the net effect of networked license plate readers is more like putting a GPS device on a car than it is like driving past individual security cameras. And if police wanted to track you over time w/ GPS device or your phone---they'd need a warrant.

Private education is still education. Homeschooling is still education. Etc. As far as I know, this is no conservative writing on the purpose of k-12 education that advocates for denying some children an education.

Me, personally. I agree. But. The entire issue that Jennifer Berkshire and Audrey Watters are writing about is that we don't have the words. And because we don't, we've failed to convince people. Ideology isn't the problem.
100
Jenn Borgioli Binis @jennbinis.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Sure. The challenge becomes at certain point, articulating a progressive argument for public education that doesn't sound like The Heritage Foundation becomes a wordsmithing challenge and no high price consultant is going to fix that.

Jenn Borgioli Binis @jennbinis.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
To be clear here, I'm not endorsing. I thought Annie was proposing language and the phrase she used reminded me of something. That said, I'm sure we'd agree that there's a certain tension if we say, as progressives, we don't think education is for human flourishing.
