One could write an entire journal article just unpacking and critiquing the layers of nonsense uttered in these few sentences by someone who is nominally looking out for education as a public good.
Teaching educators about AI is a “moral imperative”, said Randi Weingarten, the AFT president. She argues that AI training empowers teachers to make informed decisions about how, when or whether to use AI in their instruction. And without outside funding, it was a choice between taking big tech’s money or doing nothing, she said.

“There was no fairy godmother philanthropist that was sprinkling millions of dollars on us to actually create a mechanism to educate,” Weingarten said. “I am not promoting the use of AI. Educators need to know the tool.”

One thing I WILL criticize US educators for is that we have thousands of ed researchers & public scholars across thousands of institutions, many with extensive publishing capacity, & yet we frequently act like we must count on sportswriters, business reporters, & influencers to tell our stories.

Texas Tech is starting to reveal which texts are banned under its new prohibition against "Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity" research. Among them are six books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Galatians. 🧵 of other banned works. Yes, this is real.

Just yesterday, I found a 2018 academic paper that seemed to be misquoted in a 2024 paper. I looked up the quote from the 2024 paper and the search returned... You guessed it - the 2024 paper with that quote highlit. Because the quote didn't exist in the 2018 paper, which I read in its entirety.

Instagram reel by Tressie McMillan Cottom (@tressiemcphd) on what AI refusal practices can learn from black refusal. The caption reads, “My most daring idea is to refuse. Refuse that the end is here. Refuse that AI is the future. Refusal is hope and refusal is in my bones. In the tradition of every badass Black revolutionary women — from Sister Harriet to Septima Clark — I humbly refuse to let the wealthy and powerful tell us that our future is theirs. Setting aside elementary curriculum & instruction for the moment, we've known for decades much of what it takes to encourage reading in and out of school by secondary students regardless of gender, and instead of doing this, we've plied them with edtech, apps, test prep, and devices they carry 24/7.

Massive shoutout out to whoever handles the Royal Canadian Air Force’s social media account. They responded to every single comment on their already very solid Trans Day of Remembrance post and they responded like this…
A screenshot of a Facebook post where a person named Andy ask the Well now “What the hell is transgender?”
The Royal Canadian Air Force account response with “That’s a pretty big question asked in a pretty small way, Andy.

‘Transgender’ putting describes someone whose gender – who they know themselves to be – doesn’t match the sex they were assigned at birth. It’s not new, and it’s certainly not a fad. People have lived this experience for as long as people have existed; we’re just finally talking about it openly.

You don’t have to fully understand it right away, most learning takes time, but we can always start from a place of respect. That’s how decent folks handle things they’re still getting used to.”

A real loss. Rest in power, Alice Wong.
Instagram post: This is Alice's friend Sandy Ho, posting. Per Alice's wishes, this message is being shared at the time of her passing.
Hi everyone, it looks like I ran out of time. I have so many dreams that I wanted to fulfill and plans to create new stories for you. There are a few in progress that might come to fruition in a few years if things work out. I did not ever imagine I would live to this age and end up a writer, editor, activist, and more. As a kid riddled with insecurity and internalized ableism, I could not see a path forward. It was thanks to friendships and some great teachers who believed in me that I was able to fight my way out of miserable situations into a place where I finally felt comfortable in my skin.
We need more stories about us and our culture.
You all, we all, deserve the everything and more in such a hostile, ableist environment. Our wisdom is incisive and unflinching. I'm honored to be your ancestor and believe disabled oracles like us will light the way to the future. Don't let the bastards grind you down. I love you all.
