I often prefer to listen to people talk -- on a podcast, which I can listen to without looking, on my own schedule, as I do the dishes. A webinar is a different thing: on a set schedule, having to sit down in and look at a screen. I hate that. (Also mystified by people preferring video podcasts).

🧵 I want to make one point about the federal permitting bill. Before I do, I'd just encourage everyone who's interested in the details to listen to this podcast, which covers them ... extensively. There's a lot of complicated stuff in there & the cartoonish portrayals you see online are misleading.

When this portable, window-mount, heat pump came out it was $4,000-$5,000 to purchase and install. Now it is down to ~$3,000. It's a cold-climate heat pump that operates to -22°F, runs on 120V and you can still see out the window! 🧪💡🔌☀️💨💧🔋

We are 24 years away from when the world needs to be at net zero carbon emissions. Fossil fuel infrastructure and even some appliances have about a 25-year design life. That means that every gas power plant, gas pipeline, or gas boiler you install today is a middle finger pointed at your grandkids.

I just installed a 12kWh Ecoflow battery in basement, wired to essential loads. That's not a huge battery. But I use an extension cord to plug my small-ish basement battery into the 80kWh battery of my EV, with the result that I have many days of backup power, no generator.

I have a stacked LG with a heat pump dryer. It's GREAT. It's higher volume than many combo units, and as Sarah said, you can do two loads at once. Bonus I hadn't realized in advance: you're not venting conditioned air out of the home. Was very satisfying to seal up the hole where the vent was.

This is the legacy of GOP "leadership" in one of NYS's largest counties - the board of elections is underfunded, its employees overworked and its commissioners underpaid compared to their counterparts in other counties in the state. By about half. Fortunately, there's a new Dem legislative majority!
Three graphs showing that Onondaga County underfunds its board of elections, at about half the rate per voter compared to other counties in NY.

My worry is the political economy: a plan to build lots of nukes that might, all going well, come online in 2035-2040 is political permission for the Governor NOT to go as hard on building variable renewables now.

Jeff Seidman (he/him) @jeffsseidman.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
So additional nukes really are in competition with additional renewables. And in a state where energy affordability is driving the anti-clean energy discourse, taking the more expensive option is politically poisonous.
