Like many scientists, I’ve been mulling over the impact of LLMs on our fields. I’ve not yet seen it articulated, but I think there is a largely unspoken “invisible labor underclass” framework at play.

This is a nice piece on AI and mathematics. One point I disagree with: "the ball is very much in OpenAI’s court". OpenAI invented a tool, and they're keen to show it off. But those who invent tools often have limited interest in actually using them. I think it is up to *us* to decide what is next.

The Oct 1 ECMWF seasonal update is even wetter in California during Jan-Mar, and w/higher confidence, vs Sep 1 update. Nov/Dec are certainly leaning wet, but the real signal doesn't emerge until Jan-Mar. Jan and Feb have especially high potential to be extremely wet in CA.

2025 discourse: “AI will be super disruptive” “No, ha ha, LLMs are just fancy autocomplete” 2026 discourse: “Here are the solutions to a previously unsolved math problems done by AI” “OMG stop, this is super disruptive and unfair” Look, I do get it, but I’m not hearing real discourse yet.

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

My take on the current status, forecast, and impacts of El Niño 2026 - written for general audience I heard radio hosts laughing crazily about "Godzilla" El Niño this morning. I laugh about that, too. I don't even love the word "super" before El Niño. Anyway, here's what's up.

An artist is *$(n,k)$-Olivian* if their $n$ first $k$-good hits are all also $k$-immediate.
