it is possible to mathematically prove exactly what is most offensive about this image
the most efficient known packing of seventeen squares into a square. In each of the top corners, three squares are in the corners in a sensible way. Along the bottom, three squares are distributed evenly, or close to it. Seven squares are jumbled up in the middle in a cruel parody of God's creation. Then on the right there is one square oriented to the grid, jammed between two of the seven, with an impudent little fuckboi of a gap between it and the three squares in the top right corner. A red arrow is pointing to that gap.

We have had constitutional amendments before. We were extremely close to passing the Equal Rights Amendment. Is there any concerted effort around a Right to Privacy amendment? Surveillance tech (Flock, Palentir, etc), AI scraping of personal communications, bathroom policing are begging for it.

I have often been critical of the leadership @aaas.org but they just took action on the new OMB rules that will politicize science, speaking out and notifying members. I hope all take the time to follow their advice, contact Congress, and most important, post a comment www.aaas.org/news/aaas-st...
Dear Mark,

Yesterday, AAAS spoke out against a damaging proposal from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) that would jeopardize future scientific discoveries and breakthroughs by bringing politics into the heart of scientific evaluation and priority setting and rejecting the will of Congress and the American people.

The proposed rule forgets what has made America the world’s R&D leader for generations. Among many bad policy choices, the most damaging is that it would prioritize politics over merit by enabling OMB budget analysts to override scientific peer review to decide what science is worth funding. If this rule is implemented, Americans' hopes for future cures, national security, and economic strength will rely on the scientific sensibilities of the Director of OMB, the nation’s chief bureaucrat. We must speak out against this with all of our voices.

You can find my full statement here and an editorial from Science Editor-in-Chief Holden Thorp here. For further details on the proposed rule, read the ScienceInsider article.

The proposed rule is laid out over more than 400 pages. The public comment period is open until July 13 and it will take some time to fully assess the rule’s possible impacts. AAAS is already working to prepare a thoughtful, strong, and strategic official comment to OMB. In addition, we are putting all of our resources to work in public and behind the scenes to push back on this outrageous overreach.

The process for rulemaking gives all of us an opportunity to comment in the regulatory process and speak up in the political process. Here are three valuable actions for you to take:

Let your representatives in Congress know that this proposed rule is bad for everyone – not just scientists. Tell them your concerns about putting political appointees who lack the necessary expertise in charge of science and research funding decisions and the potential impact on our hopes for future cures, national security, and American jobs.
Respo…

🔭 Storytime! This paper consumed my soul for a month and it turns out that you have to look at your 2D spectroscopic data. Thread... ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2024OJAp...
Screenshot of paper text: In particular, our Na D detection is in direct conflict with the clear non-detection shown in their extended
data figure 1. We thus downloaded the data used in X23 from the SMOKA archive (Baba et al. 2002) and reduced it in IRAF (Tody 1986, 1993; Fitzpatrick et al. 2024) with the HDS routines. The S/N of the HDS spectrum is lower than the HIRES spectrum, but we clearly see the two stellar Na D lines, as well as the stronger interstellar absorption components (Fig 1). The stellar Na lines are also visible on the raw 2D science image, where we identify some cosmic rays near the Na D lines.
We suspect cosmic ray removal could have impacted the data reduction in X23. Furthermore, the 2D inspection shows that the star is not centered on the slit, making sky subtraction more difficult. As a final check, we measured equivalent widths of the lines we analyzed in our reduction of the HDS spectrum, finding no significant differences after accounting for spectrum noise. In any case, our higher S/N Keck/HIRES spectrum should provide a more reliable abundance analysis

Because “looking at images, not catalogs” is a dying pastime, the paper includes a tutorial on -how- to interpret images of galaxies. Qualitative information alone can get you a surprisingly long way towards a reasonable model, if you’re thinking through the links between morphology and physics.

Faculty have essentially two choices: (1) learn in painstaking detail how resources flow through your institution and how budgets work or (2) complain as you are cut to the bone and then broken. You’d be shocked at how many administrators and faculty do not understand their budget model.

Extremely good analogy. The endgame for AI companies is that everyone becomes dependent on their tech, and has to keep paying $2000 / year to write software. High-quality software is not actually necessary to achieve that goal.
