It's like a parody, but it's deadly serious; the Commerce Department (which includes Census, NOAA, and others) has outright deleted "don't alter or suppress scientific findings for political reasons" from its scientific integrity rules. Seriously.
Protecting against "inappropriate influence" is no longer a "hallmark" of scientific integrity

The Commerce Department updated its policy for promoting a "culture of scientific integrity" in January 2025, days before Trump's second inauguration.

A new Trump administration order bans the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis from using statistical “noise,” or data for fuzzing survey results, to protect people’s privacy in their statistics.

The 2025 version included bans on attempts to shape or interfere in data collection, statistical analysis and other scientific activities "against well-accepted scientific methods and theories or without scientific justification."

The department's policy, the 2025 version said, involves ensuring scientific findings at its agencies "are not suppressed, delayed, or altered for political purposes and are not subjected to inappropriate influence," as well as making sure there's "independent review of facilities, methodologies, and other scientific activities as appropriate to ensure scientific integrity."

That language is missing, however, in the Trump administration's revision of the policy, according to an NPR analysis of text posted on the Commerce Department's website.

And while the revision adopts a definition for "scientific integrity" that is similar to the previous version, it no longer says that "protection from inappropriate influence" is among the "hallmarks of scientific integrity."

Bari Weiss is a cancer on journalism.
To most people, El-Sayed's social media posts were likely innocuous. In fact, top politicians, including then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and mainstream news organizations, including CBS News itself, had pointed out at the time that the pandemic was killing more Americans than 9/11. But in Weiss' eyes, the news organization had apparently uncovered a scandal worthy of attention from a national news outlet.

Indeed, Status has learned that Weiss praised the story during the network's daily editorial meeting Monday, signaling her support for the piece to the entire network. In fact, I’m told that Weiss even personally directed that the headline be tweaked to specifically mention that El-Sayed had deleted tweets referencing the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Elsewhere inside CBS News, the story was not received so well. According to people familiar with the matter, many employees inside the David Ellison-owned newsroom viewed the story with disdain, believing it served as yet another blemish calling into question the organization's objectivity under new ownership.

a lot of folks on here need to read the first paragraph of this
Bouie: Sure. Before I do, I want to say two things, just to establish them right now and kind of to say where I stand on some of this stuff. The first thing is: "Woke" is a term that comes from African American vernacular. It has its origins in the 1930s, and it has traditionally meant something along the lines of: Be aware of the ways that this society is not built for you. Be aware of the ways that you may face disadvantage and oppression in this society.
Again, this is a term that emerged in Black vernacular in the 1930s. And that is, as far as I'm concerned, what the term means.
And the usage --
Cottle: You are exactly one of about 20 people who think that's what the term means.
