Scoop: For nearly a year, NSF has struggled to make new grants. Now we know that it will not catch up. In fact, NSF will award just 6,100 new grants—a 30% y/o/y decline, itself down from a previous avg. of 11,000+. In fact, the last time NSF awarded so few grants was in the early '80s.

Lots of my lovely tweeps (of old) helped out by participating in this experiment. Turns out y'all have a lovely big te reo Māori proto-lexicon, and your implicit knowledge of Māori words looks to be stronger than NZ teenagers. Thank you so much for your help! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

I'm sure it's totally coincidental that the AoNZ government's changes to the Marsden Fund have been followed by successful applications led by female investigators dropping from 55% to 33%, and successful applications led by Māori investigators dropping from 13% to 5%. 🫠 🧪

love my job. I get to work with great collaborators on fun projects like this one, published today. For his thesis, Andy looked at the production and perception of singing by NZers. He shows, consistent with previous work, that NZ singing is dominated by an American-influenced style.

MBIE is providing an update on the Horizon Europe Top-Up funding scheme.  

Change to Top-Up fund eligibility for projects in Cluster 2  
From 1 February 2025, projects in Cluster 2, Culture, Creativity & Inclusive Society, will no longer be eligible for funding through the MBIE Horizon Europe Top-Up funding scheme.  
This change is being made to align the Top-Up fund settings with the Government’s priorities for Science, Innovation & Technology investments, and direction outlined in the Catalyst Fund investment Plan. Research organisations who have submitted a proposal for a Cluster 2 project which opened before 1 February 2025 and who registered for Top-Up funding with MBIE within 10 working days of the European Commission (EC) call for proposals closing will still be eligible for Horizon Europe Top-Up funding.”
