for god's sake, people, if you need to get AI help on a grant, don't ask "how should I write it" (and definitely don't get it to write it for you), ask "how will it be evaluated" and go from there.

I wish a staff job covering harder language-related news had been a possibility. In the mid to late 1990s, the model was: freelance for a while, then get hired. But the sector lost that runway during Bush II. Now even the high-fliers from then struggle In order to succeed, you first have to last

Most of these 24 languages don't need much celebration, they are in a stable and dominant position in their respective societies, with few exceptions (e.g. Irish). It's the non-official, minoritised, marginalised languages - and their speakers! - that deserve attention. And not just once a year.

One of the things I always aimed to do with my language journalism was to advance the story. I picked that up from an editor somewhere. Very old school, right? the notion there's a collective sense of where the "story" is, of what's new and not, and that editors at big pubs are its main protectors.

We All Live Downwind — Calx Analytics
We all live downwind. Literally, from a factory or a freeway shedding microplastics with every mile driven. Metaphorically, in a world shaped by the consequences of others — a warming climate, an emptying ocean, harms we inherit rather than choose. The costs are real; the accounting is incomplete.

Let's talk about AI in archaeology journalism. NB: Never use AI to illustrate news stories on the ancient world (or really ever). Beyond just ethics, the public cannot tell that this is a fake image of the mummified remains found with a Homer papyrus on his abdomen. These images are taken as real.
