Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

At some point we also have to deal with the fact that one of the two parties is openly hostile to democracy. If you have to win big every election or else the country falls into despotism we're all just playing Russian roulette every few years

a big reason (though not the only one) that so many elite institutions capitulated to Trump immediately in early 2025 is they had learned through long experience that Dems are too chickenshit to punish them for basically any reason. but things can change!

I’m outraged by this attack on Representative Omar. Trump and his DOJ have a bizarre obsession with tearing down Minnesota, our leaders and our communities. This latest action, even as voting has already started in Minnesota, is a transparent attempt to interfere in our elections.

Some of the escalations we're seeing, including the attack on Ilhan Omar's home (I will not pretend this act was "investigatory"), are desperate acts. But we must remember that desperate people can be very dangerous. A domestic abuse victim, for example, is in the most danger when trying to leave.

I just don't care about any ~law enforcement~ story coming out of this administration because the idea of this man enforcing laws is preposterous on its face. We're talking about an arsonist doing fire code inspections. You're a sucker if you engage with any of it in good faith

the reason the media doesn't cover this for what it clearly is is because they like Trump and they want to help him rule us. Especially as we approach an election that could be a generational wipeout for Rs they will double down on attempting to help him

Those who donate brains are more likely to have CTE than those who don't (selection bias: they or their family were worried or likely suspected they had CTE); the authors did attempt to account for this with inverse probability weighting, but I doubt that fully captured the effect of that bias.

They say in their abstract "at minimum, nearly a quarter of all former NFL players who died during 2016-21 had CTE neuropathology at death" - which is different than "1 in 4 might end up with CTE." - this discrepancy is typical of how studies get written up in the press.

US Chief Justice Lets Trump Keep Building Ballroom for Now
By Greg Stohr
08/21/2026 14:11:34 [BN]
(Bloomberg) -- US Chief Justice John Roberts said President Donald Trump can keep building his new
White House ballroom for now while the Supreme Court considers issuing a longer-term order blessing continued construction of the massive structure.
Roberts' interim order comes after lower courts said
Trump was flouting the law by proceeding without congressional authorization. Under a federal appeals court ruling, Trump would have had to stop construction on Friday without Supreme Court intervention.
As is typical, Roberts gave no explanation in his administrative stay, which will remain in effect until either he or the court as a whole issues a superseding order.

“Six current and former Forest Service officials said the response was greater than what is typical for a fire of that scale that did not pose a significant threat to life or property.”
In total, about nine aircraft, including helicopters, air tankers and tactical planes, responded to the blaze on July 12, according to a Post analysis of flight paths, part of an effort that lasted a few hours and cost nearly $115,000 in federal money. The Post analysis found these assets traveled from across the West to Idaho's Alturas Lake, pear where the Cabin Creek Fire was burning.
At least some
of the aircraft were diverted from efforts to contain fires elsewhere in the state, according to two agency officials and the Post analysis of the flight paths.
