As a translator, I think a lot about how reading is an act of interpretation, and thus every translation is necessarily one person's interpretation of the text. You can't help but process the words/images on the page through your lived experiences.

Directly translating removes the original intent of the text and can easily result in mistranslations. Localization by experienced and professional translators and editors results in better translations.

We do need training for aspiring translators, to help them develop those skills, but for translation itself, not low-quality slop editing. It's going to be harder and harder to find skilled translators and get good quality translations if we pull the ladder up from behind us by pushing slop.

Yeah, I was aware of this and am not surprised. Since the acquisition was announced I was expecting that things would get worse for Japanese customers that stuck with Fontworks as it was subsumed into Monotype. Good opportunity for their Japanese competitors to step in.
