Japanese playwright and screenwriter Kuramoto Sō has died at 91. He was best known for writing TV drama "Kita no kuni kara". Set in Furano, Hokkaido, it followed a family as they matured and learned the ways of life. He later moved to the town and set up a school for script-writers and actors.

Well, it’s almost time for me to head back to Japan. I wish my visit to the UK happened under better circumstances, it’s just unfortunate that my grandfather passed away a couple of days before I arrived last week. At least I was able to say my final goodbyes in person.

A 37-year old Japanese man has admitted to setting fire to a mosque in Ebetsu, Hokkaido. Prosecutors at Sapporo District Court are seeking 9 years in prison, with the verdict scheduled for October 29th. They also noted the man’s “resentment towards foreigners buying farming equipment from him”.

The 50th Nokkamap Icharpa, a memorial ceremony for Ainu executed by Wajin during the 1789 Menashi-Kunashir rebellion, was held on the 20th at Nokkamappu (Notka’omap), in Nemuro. The ceremony serves not only to mourn the victims but also as a place for passing their history on to future generations.

Yesterday I visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The “Living Lands” exhibition introduces various Indigenous peoples. It has one of the best permanent displays about Ainu culture outside of Japan, with many of the items coming from Scotsman Neil Gordon Munro, who lived in Nibutani.

The traditional Ainu ritual Asircepnomi, in which people welcome salmon returning upstream, is being held in communities across Hokkaido this month. With the population aging, Chitose city is undertaking efforts to pass on knowledge of these traditional ceremonies to younger generations.

Unicode 18.0 and Emoji 18.0 have now been approved, for a total of 13,007 new characters, of which 9 are brand-new emoji codepoints. Small seal Chinese script and the Tangut script are also included in the expansion. This brings the total number of characters encoded within Unicode to 172,808.

So I gave the remote a clean with some contact spray as well as washing the casing. I had some success - all the buttons work except for the 2, 4, 6 and 8 buttons for the channels. Decent result. Not sure how I can get the remainder of the buttons working however.

Kanji contain many different strokes. This chart I made shows these various strokes with their Japanese names (and my English translations) by using an aggregate glyph. Many foundries have their own variants of the glyph. An updated chart from my old fonts in games microblog, Fontendo, on Twitter.

Looks like Hokkaido is getting another mascot - this time a wolf called Lulo Horkew - with the name being a combination of the Japanese "rurou" (流浪 - wandering) and Ainu "horkew" (wolf). Interesting to see where this one goes 🐺

You know, I kind of thought this game would command more cultural capital the way Tsūshima did but it seems to have come and gone without sticking around much in the public's mind, despite its acclaim. Though I did hear that people said its gameplay was too similar and Tsūshima's story was better.

A while ago I spoke about a Japanese guy on Twitter, here and Instagram who has been using gen AI to cosplay as an Ainu person (and since blocked me for calling him out lol), but today on Twitter I came across an account with almost 20K followers that appears to be a Japanese LARPing as an Emirati.

Open up the remote to have a look at the internals. Definitely needs a clean at least, but I wasn’t sure how to disconnect the battery connectors from the case in order to get a proper look at the circuit board. But from this alone the 5 key seems to have started working again, which gives me hope.

I’m super pleased to have finally obtained the elusive remote for my Sharp Super Famicom TV! It comes with a special function that changes the display settings to something tailored for games - inaccessible without the remote. Not all the buttons respond, but I might be able to fix that.

Two things I noticed this time were 1. The positions of kamuy were annotated with small signs for participants who weren’t familiar with the layout of the nusa (altar) 2. The nusa and the sacred area between it and the cise (house) was more clearly delineated with rope and keep out signs.

Hokkaido University has released a short video about a new sculpture commissioned from Nibutani Ainu woodcarver Kaizawa Toru, entitled Yaykotanhunara (translated to English as as "Seeking One’s Place"). The sculpture was placed in the University Library on the 19th, and was finished the day before.

I attended a traditional Ainu wedding, known as “Utomnukar” - meaning “to lock eyes with one another”. Based on materials like films of past weddings from the 70s in Nibutani. Other parts of the ceremony like the bride leaving her old home weren’t performed - only the main ceremony and kamuynomi.

Here is an easy way (with a phrase from the book) to spot the difference between Mainland Chinese glyph conventions versus Japanese conventions in fonts. People *will* notice and it can affect the credibility of your work - if something basic like the font is wrong, how can I trust everything else?

My copy just arrived today! I’m glad that this work was able to be reprinted. It features detailed descriptions and pictures of Ainu constellations. Very useful book for anyone researching or learning about Ainu relationships with the cosmos, and the diverse astronomy of the Japanese archipelago.

I recently got this monograph about the Ryukyu Islands by Gregory Smits. Though my expertise lies in the opposite side of the Japanese archipelago, from what I’ve read so far it appears to be very well researched and written… But the book seems to use a Chinese font for all the Japanese text 😅

Making a good font is not quick, nor easy. It takes a lot of work which is reflected in how much they cost. If you really don’t want to pay a large foundry, then support a smaller independent type foundry. Or use fonts that are available for free! If everybody pirates you won’t get good fonts.
