The prevalence of long COVID is more than a hundred times greater than the definition of a rare disease – yet there are no specific health services or support.

Fascinating thread from Ryan. Below is an explainer of what is likely going on with these v different looking variants, except in this new PJ case the chronically infected person seems to be continually transmitting infections that establish themselves in others. theconversation.com/the-emergenc...

The emergence of JN.1 is an evolutionary ‘step change’ in the COVID pandemic. Why is this significant?
The JN.1 variant has become dominant in Australia and around the world, causing large waves of infections. Here’s what we know about it so far – and why it’s so important.

Third, figuring out how saltation variants like these evolve and spread is the first step toward figuring out how to prevent them. I think people who study Covid are pretty well in agreement that these variants arise in chronic infections, but the wider public & most doctors know nothing about it.

Why do people with ME claim to know more about the medical aspects of their disease than their doctors? Because the mechanisms that usually ensure doctors' knowledge fail in the case of ME, and sick people have created mechanisms of knowledge production and dissemination to pick up the slack.

Netherlands: "Even years after infection, the situation remains hopeless for many post-COVID patients" A new study found just 12% of post-COVID patients had largely recovered 3 years after infection. Two-thirds were still unable to work or were working fewer hours due to ongoing symptoms.
A screenshot of a Dutch news article from NU.nl, written by healthcare and education reporter Kim Einder, dated 29 Sep 2026 at 18:06.
The bold white headline text overlaid on the main photograph reads: "Even years after infection, the situation remains hopeless for many post-COVID patients."
The photo shows a female patient undergoing a cardiopulmonary exercise test in a medical clinic. She is sitting slightly reclined while operating a stationary exercise bicycle ergometer. She is wearing light blue leggings, a white vest over a dark long-sleeve shirt, a pulse oximeter clip on her finger, and a blue medical mask structure over her mouth and nose connected to an airflow tube. If you learn about what long covid is and pay attention to the people around you, you're going to see people fully recover from the acute infection but develop textbook symptoms in the weeks-months following "the flu" and not put two and two together. Each infection raises the risk.
