The White House is bragging about reducing immigration (including refugees) from Muslim-majority countries to near 0. The U.S. is a nation of 340 million or so people. It was letting in just 18,000 people or less per month from these same countries prior to Jan 2025. Obvious anti-Muslim bigotry.

Awful: The Supreme Court just let Trump's third-country deportations move forward. Still a shot at stopping them later but unlikely. Reminder: If Dems win power, they can and should defund both the white-nationalist Office of Remigration and third-country deportations, as I argue in this piece:

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Everything Trump and his cabinet have said about the deal is false. Venezuelan law governing oil does not allow for 100-yr deals, or anything longer than 25 years. And US law doesn't allow us to own shares in companies. Plus, the deal as structured won’t bring new capital to Venezuela’s oil sector.
Experts are ultimately skeptical the oil deal can hold together. “The deal is like the big beautiful wall that Mexico will pay for,” said former US diplomat John Feeley.

‘Skin in the game’
It was less than a month after the January US raid that toppled Maduro that Exxon’s CEO, Darren Woods, said the country was “uninvestable” because of the “legal and commercial constructs and frameworks in place today”.

Two people familiar with the process said Trump began looking for a way to make sure the US had “skin in the game” – financial ownership that would put investors at ease. The potential answer became the US stake in Betancourt’s firm, North American Blue Energy Partners.

Though the White House and defense department say it has 35% ownership, the Pentagon told lawmakers on the congressional armed services committee in a written briefing seen by the Guardian it has “warrants” in Nabep: rights to purchase shares, rather than the shares themselves.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.
The Ebola virus doesn’t need to spill back. It abides in its reservoir host, and awaits its next opportunity. A virus can’t climb out of a bat or a monkey and fly off in search of human prey. It can only spill over. If humans left the reservoir host alone — not hunting it, not capturing it, not eating it, not exporting it live, not disturbing its forest habitat — the virus wouldn’t re-emerge in humans. It would remain where it is, harming no one. But of course that’s not what happens. And when viruses spill, they often spill into us, because the human population is such a big, busy target.

U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros' office told Mecklenburg that she was not allowed to file anything on her own behalf as a DOJ employee, her attorneys say. So, effective today, she has retired.
Based on the positions taken by the United States and Former Defendants now that these motions have been fully briefed, Ms. Mecklenburg plainly has additional legal arguments to make and facts to provide should the Court grant either or both of Former Defendants’ motions. In this regard, the Court should be aware that, when notified (through counsel) that she intended to file a motion to intervene, the U.S. Attorney’s Office advised that, as a Department of Justice employee, Ms. Mecklenburg was not permitted to file anything on her behalf and could be disciplined or terminated if she did so. Ms. Mecklenburg then notified the U.S. Attorney’s Office that she was retiring, effective on September 24, in part so that she can address these issues on her own behalf. The additional legal issues and facts Ms. Mecklenburg would address if permitted to intervene include the following events, summarized here only as examples:
