There is no either or here. 1.5C with and without overshoot requires deep CH4 reductions (and deep CO2 reductions) and massive scale up of CDR, all at levels one could question if they are feasible. If 1.5C is to die for, then you can't ignore SRM, unfortunately. It will be SRM or >1.5C. 3/

First. CDR is tiny. Yes. But CH4 is growing as fast as ever. Second. CDR has fundamental limits. Yes. But so does CH4, as it is involved in food production. Third. CH4 can reduce temp up to 0.4C. Yes, but that is already backed into the 1.5C scenarios, with and without overshoot. 2/

And superpollutants altogether -- including methane, black carbon, N2O, f-gases, and so on -- have caused about half of the warming we see today. And many of them can be effectively removed from the atmosphere in a decade or two.

#3 -- Reducing methane and other short-lived super-pollutants is the only safe bet. Why? Because methane alone has already warmed the planet by about 0.4˚C -- and we could get rid of that warming in about 10-20 years by zeroing out methane emissions.

First, the world is probably fooling itself if it thinks massive CDR will save us. Currently, human CDR is ~0.002 Gt-CO2 per year (compared to ~40 Gt-CO2 in emissions), and almost all of it comes from BECCS and biochar. And there are huge physical limitations to expanding CDR.

Once we stop climate change -- let's say at 1.8˚C or so -- there are only 3 ways to reverse some of the warming and return to a <1.5˚C world. 1. Massive carbon dioxide removal (CDR) 2. Solar radiation management (SRM) 3. Massive cuts to methane and other short-lived warming pollutants.

So it looks like we will blow past 1.5˚C of warming. Some "overshoot" beyond this goal is now looking inevitable. But can we realistically return the planet to less than 1.5˚C of warming? Maybe, but I have my doubts about some of the proposed pathways to do so.
