Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment, one of the most harmful abortion restrictions ever enacted. The Hyde Amendment prohibits coverage of abortion care for individuals enrolled in the federal Medicaid program, and disproportionately targets low-income people who rely on Medicaid.

Schools that HAVE historically had higher than average suicide rates but have gotten far less attention for this include Harvard and MIT. Cornell's handling of Jane Doe's rape case is fucked up but it has NOTHING to do with its incidence of suicide and conflating the two cheapens her trauma.

I'm not well-versed in Hawaiian history -- I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm just a dude who took Hawaiian Studies classes like any other Hawai‘i public schooler + an extra course in college. But I do know the flag came during the reign of Hawai‘i's first monarch, King Kamehameha I!

Oh, this is a great opportunity to share some history!! The state of Hawai‘i has this flag because this was the flag of the sovereign Kingdom of Hawai‘i (1795-1893). This flag survived the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, and its subsequent annexation to the U.S.

The flag of Hawai‘i with a Union Jack in the left corner, and right alternating stripes of white, red and blue. Each stripe represents the eight major Hawaiian islands of Hawai’i, Maui, Kaho‘olawe, Lāna‘i, Moloka’i, O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, and Ni‘ihau.

Hawaiian pizza was invented by a Canadian who named it for the canned pineapples he was using, which were from the Hawaiian Pineapple Company (Dole). Understandable from his perspective, but just extra salt in the wound that this gets mistaken as a legacy of Hawai‘i and not of its colonizers, lol

Worth noting that the Title IX rules that were rescinded didn't include protections for trans student athletes, because Biden withdrew that part on his way out of office. That didn't stop McMahon from framing it that way though.

The Biden administration on Dec. 20 withdrew a proposed rule that would have extended Title IX protections to transgender student athletes, acknowledging that public sentiment and legal challenges made finalizing the rule too difficult.

“It’s exactly how we enforce Title IX,” McMahon said in a video released over the weekend. “It was boys in boys sports and girls in girls sports, and now the Biden rules and regulations are being rescinded and it is a full return to the Trump administration’s Title IX ruling, as has been upheld by many courts.”

It's as if Beyonce didn't release an entire country album & do a tour. As if Old Town Road was never a hit. As much as the article wants to proclaim that never hearing of this song/artist says something about you, writing an article like this says much more about the author than they realize.

Country music fans recognize this well. We’ve become so accustomed to hearing the qualifier “I listen to anything but country music” to signal class and taste that it’s become a touchstone in sociological studies of music. As Nadine Hubbs wrote in the book Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music, “distance from country music can help to define one as a middle-class individual, which is precisely a matter of distinguishing oneself from the tastes, characteristics, and people of the working-class masses.” It’s shorthand, often, for liberal politics and a way to separate oneself from anything that could be associated with rural or Southern stereotypes. “I’ve never heard of ‘Choosin’ Texas’” is the “I listen to anything but country” of 2026.

So, maybe “I’ve never heard of ‘Choosin’ Texas’” is not quite the flex that some think it is. Instead of claiming ignorance of the song on social media, why not try a swift Google search instead. It just might open your algorithm — and also your mind.

This is why I will die on all the hills for LadyHawke and Highlander 2 (no, not the renegade version.) LadyHawke was romantically cheesy as fuck with a thin storyline. But, actors aside, it’s still high fantasy and a great movie. Highlander 2 is the only direct sequel to the original movie.
