Let this sink in. Cornell University refused to refund Jane Doe's tuition the semester she was raped. Without this money, she could not transfer to another school. Essentially, she was forced to stay on campus where she saw those seven rapists frequently. Eventually she dropped out of college.

Stop using anti-fish language
Instead of: this seems fishy
Try saying:
this seems like a situation in which we should consult the wisdom and grace of the European seabass, a species with which i would entrust my entire life and personal safety

One of the big drivers of the Choosin Texas discourse is that it’s no longer enough for people to accept something exists and be okay with that, you have to actively affirm its greatness. Saying you don’t like it is the greatest sin of all. You gotta grow up if that’s how you’re gonna act.

The entitled wealth mindset birthed this current regime of "AI": "got an email? Make AI do it. Got a job interview? Make AI do it. Gotta talk to your kids? Make AI do it." It's just servants w/ extra steps. And the billionaire mindset of "why would i ever need to think about that?" is so much worse

I have been doing academia professionally for a quarter century and I am still trying to figure out how to do some of these things
A key reason is that first-generation graduates appeared to have less social or cultural capital than people from more privileged backgrounds, as the paper puts it. Because of their upbringing, they have fewer friends and relatives in a position to help them, and aren’t as good at working the system on their own. They might bungle a social interaction or come off the wrong way in an email. They might fail to leverage a chance encounter with a famous professor, or be altogether unaware of the need to court prominent patrons.

And my concern is that people will react to Hannah-Jones's piece with a simple "well, you should have picked the 'good' school" and not ask themselves why Hannah-Jones and many others are faced with that "choice" in the first place. Because they won't like the answer.
