Thank you 💙 There's so much change at this time of year. Many people like it. I find it stressful and unsettling.

Thank you 💙 It was one of those strange stormy days when the sky was cloudless blue out of one window and almost black out of the other.

Thank you! I often write what I see out of this window, look for the visuals first before looking for the words.

Friday again so it's thanks to @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk for another #PoemsAbout #Bites This one was inspired by my Dad's love of sailing and stories of the coast from Texel up to the Wadden Zee.
The Bite of the Bight
Whispering winds transformed
Northerly storms
Giants of the Arctic
Whistling down, around,
Engulfing de Duitse Bocht
Ship sheltering between isles and land
Evading the short grey Northern Sea For something worse to come
Silent swells forecasting
Omens of volatile seas
Of something worse brewing,
Frozen fingers gathering bights,
Shortening the sheets, Reefing sails ready For rolling waves,
Unexpected mud and sand Shifting creeks, twisting channels The triumvirate of Wadden rivers
Leviathans alone
Carving treacherous shoals
Surging tides, billowing waves,
Rolling with the wind
Calling the Waarschip to the depths Entrenched, consumed, chilled By a bitterly biting sea

Good morning! My poem for #PoemsAbout #Bites is a revision of a poem I wrote for Paul Brookes @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social ekphrastic challenge with art by @karenpgonzalez.bsky.social Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk I'll be back later!
Poem:
Choices: Divergence, Convergence

In the woods, you choose a road,
this one, or the other,

perhaps they are the same—or not—

perhaps you meet a snake with jeweled
lapis scales,

perhaps he offers
you this or that,
his tongue flicking words
you catch poison-sweet
on your tongue--

perhaps instead
you see a wave of wildflowers,
nodding their heads,
scenting the path

just before the strike, the bite.

Art work by Karen Pierce Gonzalez, a snake in spring green, aqua, yellow, and orange, studded with round blue jewels or buttons. Black background.

The atmosphere set in the first lines, so stark and lonely, contrasts so sharply with the sensual lushness of the later lines.

Watching the municipal verge-trimmer wreak its devastation Beneath the roof tiles, in the dark of dust and chitin-sharded debris, dig and chew a regiment of mice. In the dusty dark of ever-moonless nights, the scrabble-scratch scrapes its frantic tuneand draws down the owls from their silent star-specked flight,to snatch up wanderers, pit-pattering among the litchened moon-dapples. The roof-world is soft silence…

Thank you. The activity under the roof tiles is what fascinates one of the dogs. My nights are often broken by a Little Owl that sits on the shutter of the bedroom window and shrieks. I'm sure it's always the same one.

A small study in distance, denial and cut flowers. #poemsabout #rot #poetrysky #poetsky
STILL FLOWERS

The flowers lasted eighteen days.
I know because I counted.

By six, the water had gone cloudy.
By nine, the first stem bent.
By thirteen, they had started
leaning on each other
for structural reasons.

I changed the water anyway.

From the kitchen door
they still looked like flowers.

I tried the hallway.

Still flowers.

The sofa:
flowers.

Three feet away:

less convincing.

Up close
they had become
a collection of failures,
minor and major.

Apparently beauty
has a minimum viewing distance.

Nobody tells you this.

Museums know it.

Pointillists knew it.

By eighteen
I knew it too.

I agree with what's already been said. This, to my mind, is what poetry is about—conveying a personal, intimate reflection in a way that hits a universal nerve.

Good morning lovely #poets, sharing something new for #PoemsAbout #Rot this week. 'Glas' can mean grey (Gaelic), green (Irish, sometimes Gaelic), blue (Welsh, Breton) or even paler/silvery shades! Colour as a social construct!
Glas

To learn the words
for colours,
we must unsee.
Nothing is fixed,
nothing finite.

Changes come
with the light,
the season,
your mood,
my presence.
Or unpresence.

On your table
are the flowers,
he left.
Left
too long.
Bleeding to
grey.

Well, the farmers have had a bad year, poor yields, no rain, so let's pay them to grub up all the greenery that's left. Miserable.

Thanks Jan 💙 I perhaps live too much in this very tightly-defined present. The damage we do in the name of 'employment' (it's essentially out-door relief for small farmers) is inexcusable.

The reasons are things that don't belong to me, don't care about me at all, but it's enough to know they are there and to see them from time to time.

Good morning and happy Friday! Here's an old poem I revised for #PoemsAbout #DeadLetters. Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Poem:

Erasure

Here is where time unfolded wings
and flew from

the straight path I had imagined

the stars have shifted, I cannot
navigate this whirligig expanse,

the parallel universe
where you wrote her letters
and she slept in my place.

Now I burn every word,
all the traces, hints, glimpses–

love and us,
erased.
