A really good example of this is how few posts I've been connecting events at Cornell with the women's campus protests going on in India about wide-spread sexual assault. There's no question there would have been mass solidarity between the two movements on ~2016 Twitter.

New open-access paper: Direct File showed that govt could build its own user-centered platform without relying on contractors. But the product was killed after a DOGE lead spoke with the private tax preparation industry lobbying against a private option. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The ability of governments to build and sustain public interest capacity partly depends upon the position of private interests, and the ability and willingness of a government to resist private interest opposition.
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) built a digital tax reporting service, Direct File, that created significant public value for users.
Direct File depended upon the creation of internal capacity: a government digital service team that could build digital platforms, rather than procuring a product from private vendors. Government control of the process allowed agile development and iterative improvement that would have been impossible under a traditional outsourcing model.
Long-standing opposition to Direct File by the private tax preparation industry, combined with Trump-era downsizing by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led to the elimination of the tool.

MA has a historic number of ballot questions. Here's a handy guide for the 9 statewide ballot questions this year.
✅VOTE YES ON 1 to expand the public records law to cover the Governor and the Legislature. We’re the only state in the country that doesn’t do that already. Let the sunlight in.

✅VOTE YES ON 2 to enable public defenders to collectively bargain. Every worker deserves to have a union, and public defenders, who are often overworked and underpaid, should be no exception.

❌VOTE NO ON 3 to prevent private equity billionaires from rigging our election system in their favor. Top-two primaries empower corporate PACs and self-funders, disadvantage grassroots candidates, and turn MAGA voters into election kingmakers.

✅VOTE YES ON 4 to enable voters to register to vote or update their registration on Election Day. No eligible voter should be turned away due to a clerical error, and this reform is one of the most proven ways to increase voter turnout.

❌VOTE NO ON 5 to protect our state’s ability to invest in health care, transportation, and public education. The rich would get millions in tax rebates, while the rest of us suffer from underfunded public services.

⚪VOTE how you want on 6. Question 6 fell shy of our endorsement threshold: our members valued land and water conservation, but were worried about the dedication of existing funds as opposed to new ones.

✅VOTE YES on 7 to enable more starter homes across the Commonwealth. We have a housing crisis, and large lot size requirements mean fewer homes are able to be built.

❌VOTE NO on 8 to protect our state’s cannabis laws. We said NO to the war on drugs back in 2016, and we shouldn’t turn back time and destroy local economies.

✅VOTE YES ON 9 to protect our state’s landmark gun safety law, which cracked down on ghost guns, banned machine gun conversion devices, and strengthened gun violence data collection.

Pillay is really well known to people who advocate for & study international human rights; she also couldn’t be more different in some ways than last year’s winner. Selecting Pillay, I imagine, is a way to underscore the value of defending human rights in an increasingly regressive, repressive world

I was struck that Mamdani just released his plan to combat anti-Semitism, and he sidestepped the question of Israel, seeing it as separate from anti-Semitism. For us, these issues intersect and overlap.

I was told Zohran Mamdani would instantly turn New York into a crime-ridden hellscape. Yet murders are down almost 20%, year over year. 203 people have been slain, about 22.5 per month. In 1990, that average was *251 per month.* NYC has never been this safe.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

I agree with this sentiment. but it also does seem to me that the dem base has moved left and that this is a fundamentally good thing. I guess I don't see polarization as obviously bad. (the age of consensus in this country was plenty problematic anyway.)

I was then perplexed by the Vanderbilt/Washington University report. Health inequity and disparities, lack of diversity, urban racial segregation, structural racial discrimination, each of which is taken as an a priori societal ill to be addressed, are seemingly proper objects of study, research and, yes, at times advocacy, across much of my university’s vast research enterprise. And yet, for my colleagues in the humanities, the report casts the same a priori assumptions as suspect, as political goals that threaten to “distort the scholarly enterprise.”
