"I might not have been able to talk, but I knew hundreds if not thousands of words. Pretty silly to assume that just because someone can’t say something, they don’t know it." And yet, this assumption is made about nonspeakers every day in schools, care settings, and communities.

I don't disagree. But, as I wrote back to these reporters, I am most optimistic about projects that respond to the expressed concerns of students and teachers. These are the people who spend 180 days inside schools each year, and they're the key actors in the process of teaching and learning. 1/n

Do not normalize children dying from measles. Measles was previously eliminated in the US, thanks to vaccines. When children die from measles, it means that adults have catastrophically failed to protect them because they have rejected basic science.

This is ... good?! If only they hadn't also defunded the infrastructure that would help with these things: independent evidence/evaluation, evidence of effectiveness, evidence-based tools, data on dosage. They could STILL fund these things but that would require them to stop impounding funds.

THIS. Adults' expectations of young people as "digital natives" and the reality of what young people are actually comfortable doing on a computer are not aligned. Once they're taught the basics, they pick them up quickly. But they need to be taught!

Boards! Accreditation! All the sexiest higher ed topics.
Screenshot of article which reads: At this moment, power within U.S. higher education is overwhelmingly concentrated within governing boards and governments, particularly federal and state. To better protect higher education from political attacks intended to restrict or distort its work, that power needs to be spread out to two groups with deeper practical expertise and less uniform alignment with particular ideologies: actual workers on college campuses and accreditors.

As I said the other day - this story is very much revealing how little folks understand the massive reach and influence of agribusiness and how the food chain works. Framing the story around taco bell is a good ex of news coverage failing to give us the info we need about our corporate food system.

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

Margulis’s endosymbiosis hypothesis is now accepted, but initially met scepticism and even ridicule. Sexism surely played a part in that, but there’s a thesis to be written on the resistance of academic biology to notions of cooperation and collaboration in evolution – or the determination to recast them as mere expediency by “selfish genes”. Margulis made the rather gender-essentialist claim that scepticism about symbiosis was a rejection of the “feminine”, but one can’t help noticing that an emphasis on interconnection in the natural world often came from women, whether it was Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring or the “wood wide web” of forestry scientist Suzanne Simard, the inspiration for a character in Richard Power’s 2018 eco-fable The Overstory.

What does a "good life" look like for autistic kids (and adults)? Well, we can guarantee that if you don't ask autistic people themselves, you're probably going to miss the mark. Thankfully researchers DID ask autistic people, and their parents. Here's what they reported: osf.io/preprints/os...
Canva graphic with a pale pink background.

Text reads, "What Helps Autistic Children Live a “Good Life”?

Researchers asked autistic adults
and parents of autistic children,
who mentioned four important areas:

1. Autistic children being accepted as their real or true self
2. Autistic children finding the things that they enjoy & that energize them
3. Autistic children having a sense of control in their life, and
4. Physical environments that suit autistic children’s sensory needs"

Small text in the lower left reads, "From Simpson, Allen, Wheeley, Pellicano, Heyworth, den Houting, Bowen, & Adams

This is exactly it. The work is the point.
When I assign analysis, I am not trying to extract a polished product; I am trying to put the student’s mind through resistance in order to make it stronger. Offloading the struggle to a chatbot does not “free students up for higher-order work.” It deprives them of building the strength to do any substantial cognitive work at all.
