James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 09/10/2026It's the same with any news story about how small boat crossings have significantly reduced. Every comment is some variation on "their all coming in BIG boats now" made by people who don't understand what the statistic is measuring. Some people just want to feel angry and betrayed. 020
James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I remember long back in the days of Corbyn Twitter a post of mine got piled on for saying that I couldn't vote Labour because of antisemitism. I muted the response and forgot about it, but Daniel Finkelstein took the time to message and thank me. I'm always touched when I think of it. 000

James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I had rather hoped that honouring a fat man with a beard and regressive opinions on women and capital punishment was a tradition the Church of England left behind in the 16th century. 010

James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 27/08/2026Sure, but it was implemented and none of that happened. People for the most part have already forgotten about it. Mass pedestrianisation will have much more of a visible impact on people that would (hopefully) continue in perpetuity. 000

James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 27/08/2026I'm not sure ULEZ is that useful a comparison because at the end of the day, it hardly impacted anyone. Completely restructuring London so that it's built around people rather than cars will affect everyone. The benefits would outweigh the harms imv, but it's a very different political challenge. 460

James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 15/08/2026The funny thing about the Harry Potter game is that it pretty explicitly rejects JKR's views. It has by far the most diverse cast of any media set in the HP world, including the first (+ sympathetically portrayed) trans woman. In another world there'd have been an equally impotent anti-woke boycott. 000
James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 12/08/2026It's very funny because the best example of this in recent film is Pride (2014) but the fact that it depicts actual historical events contradicts Ganesh's argument so he just gestures vaguely instead. 051

James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 18/07/2026The question I'd be fascinated to hear Mahmood answer is if net migration is so important, why do Reform voters (i.e., those who are most sceptical of immigration) overwhelmingly feel that the country is in a "much worse state" now after net migration has been reduced by 80%? 220

James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 01/07/2026Oh I think it is simultaneously true that people who say "I'm not racist, but" are racist *and* genuinely and sincerely believe that they're not. (The same is true with antisemitism on the left fwiw). 010
James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I think Mahmood sincerely believes that if you can meet these 'legitimate concerns' and show people that the immigration system is sustainable and that people coming in are net contributors, you unlock the latent support for immigration that is expressed before the "but". 100
James Hopkins @jamesw91.bsky.social · 01/07/2026When you speak to people the refrain you hear almost every single time is "I'm not against immigration, I like [immigrant they know and like]" but then they express concern about a) numbers ("we're only a small island"), and b) types of immigrant ("they're just coming here for the benefits"). 200
