How long is this sign going to be required to be there? 100 yrs? A thousand? Let it go.

This is the epitome of Vancouver’s half-assed way of doing things. It’s either heritage or it’s not. If it is, maintain it in its original form with public money. Don’t let a private business slap its branding over and obscure it. It’s been, what, more than 40 yrs since the original Bowmac closed?

Freshco arriving in Fairview soon. I know others at that other site made this same point, but the Bowmac sign can’t be removed because it’s “heritage“ but it’s also obviously not being required to be maintained. Like, you know, any other historic site in the world.

Hoo boy. A deep dive on the cross-border effort to sway Alberta’s secession vote, from @carrietait.bsky.social, Nathan VanderKlippe and Grant Robertson www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
A Globe and Mail investigation has found that Republican political operatives were on the ground in Alberta this year to assist the separatist campaign in its bid to leave Canada, while harbouring their own aspirations for the province to secede.

The Globe also found that when Alberta separatist leaders went to Washington to meet with the U.S. State Department, they offered up key assets from the province’s resource portfolio, including access to fresh water and royalties on crude oil, in exchange for help transitioning to independence.

Through interviews with The Globe on both sides of the border, people involved in politics, the corporate sector and Alberta’s pursuit of separatism have described persistent efforts by figures in the U.S. administration and conservative political establishment to support groups seeking American expansionism and independence for Alberta.

ANALYSIS | Eby puts needs of car owners ahead of transit advocates in ruling out Metro Vancouver vehicle levy | CBC News
For the last 18 months, a vehicle levy has been talked about by TransLink as a potential way to create a more sustainable funding model, as revenue from fuel taxes continues to decline. But all that w...

In response to David Eby lowering the province-wide gas tax by 10¢, TransLink should, in response, raise their separate fuel levy by 10¢ to make up the difference 😌 Purely by coincidence, the TL board is meeting right now.

So much respect for this, and the framing. ABC, the right wing version of Progress Toronto, has used health care workers/hospitals as reason to rip them out. This puts a lie to that (and on University ambulances can bypass cars in the wide bikelanes if needed). So many lies.

It's worth repeating: The America we once knew is *never* coming back. What comes next is anyone's guess. It could be a long, slow, sad slide to true authoritarianism. Or a quick one. Or America breaking into into constituent nations (hi, Yugoslavia!) But...it could also lead to something better.

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.
Screenshot for a Defector podcast episode with the headline "Consider the Emotional Lives of Scallops" only the accompanying photo is a white gormless stubbled red-headed UK singer of recent notoriety giving a flat smile to the camera while wearing a washed out peach top as beige as he is against a flat background. So, actually, probably a scallop anyway.
