The accusation that the Lords are “obstructing democracy” by supporters of the assisted dying bill is a ridiculous one that shows up the flaws in this process that have been there from the very beginning – which have repeatedly been covered up by heated rhetoric (1/?)

After some consideration, the synthesis I have settled on is Starmer is bad and cynical for shamelessly pulling strings to block a rival, Burnham is bad and cynical for being ready to risk a Reform mayor in Greater Manchester for his own ambition, and it is time at last for chaos with Ed Miliband.

Really useful paper. Traditional dosing strategies (200mg IM loading, followed by 800-1200mg/day) don't reflect its half-life. Typical loading doses of around 600mg may not need any follow-on regular dose (or a very-much-less than 800mg/day dose if used)

At the point you’re taking four years why not use that time to do it via a citizens assembly or a judicial inquiry, instead of basically having all the disadvantages of rushed legislation and all the disadvantages of a slow, considered process?

I think this is really important and if we (society) want AD then I wish the government would just embark on a proper process to get consensus, create a full package, including how it will in practice work, then offer that up for a parliamentary vote. The current way lacks bravery and leadership.

Having a free vote at the end of the process makes sense, but I think that the government of the day is going to need to have a more active role in actually shaping assisted dying legislation rather than the way that successive governments have chosen:

I think the government has gone about this in the wrong way. No case to legislate so quickly. (if the govt thinks there is potentially a case for change). Much better to set up a review (Royal Commission even), debate the options with the public and then construct a package

I agree MPs ultimately need to decide, but citizens assemblies are not just about informing MPs but helping to form policy, understanding citizens, and maybe even informing them. Whatever people think about assisted dying it’s not going away just because MPs vote no. This whole thing is a right hash
