We're in the midst of a massive crisis of epistemic authority and social trust, with much of the online information ecosystem basically collapsing into an algorithmic swirl of unverifiable rumour, and Wikipedia is one of the few institutions holding out. Attacking it is stupid and irresponsible.

Just 19% of the online encyclopedia’s biographies are of women. Is this because it’s edited by ‘mostly white, middle-aged, European men’, as the comedian claims?

Chancellor of the Exchequer

While the job of Chancelior had more institutional similarities with hat of Defence Secretary than I expected, they were totally different in ne vital respect. When I was responsible for the nation's defence, I had he power to see that my decisions were carried out by nearly a million military and civilian personnel under my direct control. When I was responsible for the nation's economy, the success of my policies depended argely on people over whom I had no direct control whatever, and over hom no one had any central control - the workers and managers in British industry, and the men and women who bought what they produced, both at home and abroad. My central problem was to discover which of the decisions open to me as Chancellor were most likely to get these people to behave as I wanted.
The study of economics is supposed to provide the answers to this problem. I am often asked whether I did not find it a disadvantage as Chancellor to have studied Latin and Greek, philosophy and ancient history, rather than economics. My answer is always no. In my experience, a minister who has studied economics at university usually has at best only a general recollection of what he was taught at least twenty years carlier, by academics who had studied the economy at least twenty years carlier still. Economics is not a science. It is a branch of social psychology. which makes the absurd assumption that you can understand how peopic behave when they are making, buying, and selling things, without studying the society in which they live, and all the other ways in which they spend their time.
The study of political economy, on the other hand, can help a Chancellor. İ learned a lot of lasting value from that seminal treatise, Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy, by Joseph Schumpeter. He had been a right-wing Finance Minister in Austria before devoting his life to the academic study of economics in its political and social context. It was not his only…
