idk how to get this to people who need to hear it, but authors reaching out to developmental editors should, uh, really not be using AI to write your emails

This is thrilling, but I'm guessing it means Lena Dunham is not working on my dream project: a Gus Van Sant-style shot-for-shot remake of THE BIG CHILL starring the GIRLS cast. For the record, here's the casting: LENA DUNHAM / MARY KAY PLACE 1/x

The song “Yakko’s World” was never accurate for any date in history even if you ignore all the non-countries that are included for meter and rhyme. The song refers to “Germany now in one piece” and later to “both Yemens”. Yemeni reunification actually occurred nearly half a year before German.

Hey California! Be careful this election because the big money creeps are trying to trick you (again).
There's a trap on your ballot in California. Here's how to get past it.
1. Prop 40: 250 billionaires pay with they owe so hospitals, schools, and food assistant survive the federal cuts. Vote yes.
2. Props 41 and 42: paid for by billionaires to cancel prop 40. Vote no.
3. Tell one person, because the confusion is the plan.
Yes I'm 40. No on 41 and 42.

Pretty exhausting to continuously see "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" be turned into "I actually should be able to do whatever I want without considering the ethics of it at all."

It's important to remember that the AI doom scenario assumes not only that intelligence is a single well-defined thing, but also that intelligence solves literally every single problem, and that in every conflict overwhelming intelligence always wins. This is just not how anything works.

Reposting for the morning crowd my mini-thread from yesterday on the new Sponsel & Sutton paper on Rosalind Franklin's work. tl;dr: Why didn't Franklin find the double helix? Because she wasn't looking for it! She had her own DNA project that had nothing to do w/ the gene.

On his 58th birthday, Goessling met his birth mother in person and later connected with his biological father over the phone. When Goessling asked what he did for a living, his father mentioned he was a musician preparing to tour through St. Louis that summer.

"And I said, 'Are you Michael McDonald?" Goessling said. "And he said, 'Yeah, I'm afraid so."

Hey you heard about this story coming out of Massachusetts? Apparently this group of self-selected individuals, who largely feel out of place in a world of great sorrow and despair - like, they're in this world, but not of it - formed a very intentional community as an example to the rest of the world, like a beacon that shines on a hill. And now they're tearing each other apart over seemingly inscrutable moral infractions! All this, in Massachusetts! Can you believe it?

(2) PERSON 1: Only two instruments remain. Do we want to lose the plasma wave subsystem or the magnetometer? (3) PERSON 2 with ponytail: You know, if we just turned off Greg’s LED underlighting– PERSON 4 with short hair: Absolutely not. PERSON 3: Dammit, Greg. PERSON 4: I will *not* allow us to look uncool in front of aliens.
