I'm lurking in several online communities and groups that are just drowning in posts about "I know everybody hates AI slop but look at this version that MY robot crapped out of the thing you've seen posted here a dozen times this week". The future is dumb.

Heard an interview today where someone said the dumbest thing ever. "When an AI agent hacks a website, there's no law that can arrest the AI." No mf, you arrest the person who pressed "deploy." wtf are we doing here? Did COVID turn everyone's brains into applesauce?

It's wild that so many people are so enthusiastically giddy about smashing the "burn the planet" button in exchange for statistically likely simulated work product.

My theory is that all of this is a downstream effect from the super toxic trait of not being willing to understand that every highly successful person is actually not carried by Intelligence Strength or Charisma but is a Luck build

Imagine what would be possible if we funded education. Adequately, fully, publicly, in proportion to its importance in society and all the burdens that fall to it. Really: imagine. People in power and on the far right have, and that's why we're in this mess. They don't want that to ever happen.

Seems like using the statistically-likely-BS machine hurts people's ability to recognize their own BS. Recently saw someone brag that "I haven't even seen a single line of code in my vibe coded app". Then two sentences later "the code is so clean and it will be really easy to add new features".

There’s such an easy answer to this “gotcha” question and it’s “Sports are inherently unsafe and unfair and it’s ridiculous to single out trans athletes when we allow 150 pound linebackers to go up against 260 pound linemen in freshman football on a daily basis. Let kids play with their friends.”

Among the many incredible things this book does is lay out how the US went from here to the maddening tomfoolery of today…
Text reading “In 1957, Dwight Eisenhower became the first American president to visit a mosque when he spoke at the opening of the Islamic Center of Washington. "I should like to assure you, my Islamic friends, that under the American Constitution, under American tradition, and in American hearts, this Center, this place of worship, is just as welcome as could be a similar edifice for any other religion," he said. "Indeed, America would fight with her whole strength for your right to have here your own church and worship according to your own conscience. This concept is indeed a part of America, and without that concept we would be something else than what we are.””

Unpopular opinion: When someone is factually wrong about something important—eg vaccination—telling them that they’re wrong is treating them with respect. The condescending thing to do is indulge them, act like they have a point, as if the thing you know to be wrong might be at least somewhat right.

fun part if you ask me: higher ed institutions in secular democracies are the closest approximation of a 'marketplace of ideas' as you are likely to find this side of a global revolution and a lot of people who claim to like that idea do not seem to love its results

This is what public power looks like. In grad school I was taught about the German energy transition strategy "energiewende" - hailed for its goals. What school neglected to cover was the dual strategy of "rekommunalisierung" or municipalization that ended private ownership of energy assets.
