A delicate rectangular, portrait-mode painting against a gold background of a stalk of yellow hibiscus above, with two flower blossoms, arching from the right to the left side of the page; and below, as stalk of a plant with two red flowers next to a stalk of a plant with four flowers with blue petals and yellow centers. There are two square-shaped red stamps, one over the other, in the bottom left corner of the work.

People say Londoners are cold. But experts say what comes across as rudeness to some is a kind of “civil inattention” that’s necessary in big cities. We’re not mean – we’re just overwhelmed.
Another term for this behaviour is “civil inattention”, which sociologist Erving Goffman coined to explain how strangers in urban public recognise each other’s presence without engaging with them - ie. not staring or trying to chat. For years I have thought myself strange and rude for not making eye contact on the tube, even when people’s bodies are separated by just millimetres of stale air. But actually this is an act of self-preservation and respect.

The fact that interest on illegal donations doesn't need to be returned creates a perverse incentive to receive impermissible donations in the first place. Why wouldn't you, if you can pocket quite significant interest, and there's no sanction if you return it within the legal time frame?

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

Dear Nigel,
5 September 2026
MY COMMITMENT
At Reform UK's conference today, I have publicly committed to increasing the tax-free Personal Allowance to £15,000, in my first Budget called within the first 100 days of a Reform government.
This change would cut taxes for 40 million British taxpayers.
It would take 2.9 million people out of income tax altogether. It would ensure that the State Pension was not taxed.
It would be worth almost £1000 to an average working couple.
It would form the centerpiece of a new bargain with British workers; a new bargain that puts them first, and ahead of welfare cheats, foreign nations, and the bloated civil service.
MY OFFER OF RESIGNATION
This isn't an aspiration, nor is it an aim. It is a promise. It is a promise I made to thousands of party members in Birmingham and millions of voters across the country live and on camera. And it is a promise I plan to keер.
If I do not deliver it, I should not remain Chancellor. Please consider this my letter of resignation.
failing to The British people are sick and tired of Chancellors and Governments deliver on their promises. In business, those who fail to deliver are sacked, not given honours. Reform, as a party of successful businesspeople, will bring that culture to Westminster. The British people deserve accountability and, with you as Prime Minister, they will get it.
Britain is broken. Britain needs Reform. And we must deliver.
Yours sincerely,
Robert Jennick.
