Sagal Abdi-Wali constantly emphasises her reputation in the charity sector. So you can imagine our surprise when her team refused to share which charities she's worked with. We did find some former colleagues, though - and they weren't exactly complementary.

Labour's Sagal Abdi-Wali is the clear favourite to win the by-election in Keir Starmer's old MP seat this week. But speaking to current and former colleagues, @petercarlyon.bsky.social found many who questioned her much-publicised track record at Camden council and as a local charity worker.

People say Londoners are cold. But experts say what comes across as rudeness to some is a kind of “civil inattention” that’s necessary in big cities. We’re not mean – we’re just overwhelmed.
Another term for this behaviour is “civil inattention”, which sociologist Erving Goffman coined to explain how strangers in urban public recognise each other’s presence without engaging with them - ie. not staring or trying to chat. For years I have thought myself strange and rude for not making eye contact on the tube, even when people’s bodies are separated by just millimetres of stale air. But actually this is an act of self-preservation and respect.
