The 2021 census has 37% in England with no religion. The latest Social Attitudes report has 40% in Britain not aligned to any political party. Do we know the overlap? And when will there be a name for this important group?

"English" is a nationality and a language. It is not a race. Here's a very readable and entertaining book which explains it all. Trigger warning: contains some actual history.

We had an epic evening yesterday playing the 100 Club on London's Oxford Street! It is an iconic stage that has seen everyone from Ronnie Scott and Benny Goodman to Oasis and Metallica. Thank you to the awesome crowd!🤘

This is huge. The British Museum was created in 1753 as the world's first national museum, open to all and free. Other countries copied, but most now charge. Universal accessibility is fundamental to the DNA of Britain's public museums. A super decision! www.gov.uk/government/n...

And the edges of reality blur a little further into void. Mind you, he declared his 19-year-old son Barron had an "unbelievable aptitude for technology" because he knew where the on button was on his laptop. So there's that.

There are many reasons why England is a truly great country. Its astonishingly diverse music scene is one of them. These guys have been thumping it out loud and melodic since the '60s, and still take one's breath away. Judas Priest at the one and only Hammwrsmith Odeon tonight.

The Church of England says 1.7% of the population go to services at least monthly. Many are elderly. What will happen to its 16.000 English churches (incl. 42 cathedrals) if/when its congregation/finances or both become unviable? What is the plan? Who is overseeing it?

Yesterday we relaunched the City of London’s Blue Plaque scheme with a plaque for Francis Barber. He was born a slave in Jamaica, brought to England as a child and freed. He was a servant to Dr Johnson, who made him his heir. After Johnson’s death Barber became a school master near Lichfield.

The University of Bergen Museum is a gem. Among the fun: an underwater seabed mapping vehicle with the genius name HUGIN, and an astonishing room of many magnificent whale skeletons. The Natural History collection is among the most extensive I have ever seen. @UiB_museet

The Reformation pulverized c. 850 English monastic altars. The Tudors, then Oliver Cromwell, took hammers and axes to virtually every English church. Now contemporary music and dancing raise outrage at 'unprecedented sacrilege'. Are we entering a new Puritan age?

In the UK, the ‘dignity’ of city status comes from royal letters patent, ancient usage, charter, or other reasons lost in the mists of time. (Some have cathedrals, others do not.) Winchester and Canterbury have among the richest histories of any cities in the country.

The "Pythagorean comma" is a tiny interval between notes that are enharmonically equivalent in modern tuning, e.g., G♯ and A♭, but have slightly different pitches in Pythagorean tuning. It's roughly a quarter of a semitone. Just... what?!?!?! 🤯🎼

[1/4] Understanding decibels is, it turns out, categorically impossible unless you have a degree in equations with Greek stuff. Add 10 dB and the sound has 10 times the intensity, but apparently only sounds twice as loud. Fine.

I have said it before. Use the cathedrals. Move government around like in the past. Bring the money caravan to all cities. We have stunning empty cathedrals. Use them for government as before. Get MPs into them for debates. PMQs around the nation. Who wouldn't enjoy that?

My essay is on Saladin, who achieved that rare honour of being respected and admired by his own side and his enemies. In honour of the occasion I have got my old mess kit out to add a splash of British Army Red Coat. A fabulous book that takes us from Sun Tzu to David Petraeus!
