If there was one lesson from political science I wish I could shotgun into the minds of everyone, it might that MONEY DOES NOT BUY ELECTIONS Elections are mainly determined by deep social & economic factors that a few TV & online ads can only affect at the margin.
Half a billion dollars in GOP spending does little to move polls

Republicans’ massive money advantage has yet to reshape the midterm map, as Democrats keep expanding their ambitions.

This is another fun canadianism. You would think FNs would be naturally quite skeptical towards a king, but they have successfully been able to use activism and petitioning the crown to assert their rights. Republicanism can be seen as a removal of practical power for a some of them

If care about free markets, you not only get more from center-left Dems than the party of Trump, you get more *from professed democratic socialists* like Mamdani than you do from the party of Trump. Those who deny this only think of it as an anti-left cultural totem and not a real policy agenda.

A couple years ago in a talk, the proposal was that libertarians need some sort of values from conservatives. When I pressed, she said liberal values are also an option, but did not answer the part of my question about why libertarians should choose conservative values. Maybe it's in the book. 🤷‍♀️

I do not understand how she proposes to make the alliance work without communism. Lots of wishcasting on the pro-market right that enough people just want fusionism to work, but I don't see evidence of that. I won't complain too much before reading her book but it's not looking good fellas (gn).

and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

And as @mattzwolinski.bsky.social wrote, it's important that political power can be lost--without violence: www.liberalism.org/p/democracy-...
Why should it matter so much that power can be lost? One answer can be found in the work of the economic historians Douglass North, John Joseph Wallis, and Barry Weingast. In their sweeping and ambitious book, Violence and Social Orders, they argue that for most of human history, communities have solved the problem of social violence by means of what they call a “limited access order.” A coalition of elites agrees not to fight, and that agreement is held together by privilege. Only members of the coalition may hold certain kinds of property, enter certain trades, or form certain kinds of organizations. “The creation of rents through limiting access,” they write, “provides the glue that holds the coalition together.”

This is precisely the world of chartered monopolies and guild privileges that Adam Smith attacked in The Wealth of Nations. But it wasn’t just the economic logic of Smith’s critique that brought that world to an end. In the countries that made the transition to “open access,” economic and political openness arrived together, “within relatively narrow windows of historical time.” General incorporation laws replaced corporate charters that had required “an explicit grant by the legislature [or] the crown.” The reform occurred during the same era that competitive political parties formed and the franchise began to widen. This was no accident. On North, Wallis, and Weingast’s account, the two kinds of openness depend on each other. Closed economies and closed political systems propped each other up, and economic openness could be sustained only alongside political openness.

As @jacobtlevy.bsky.social put it: www.niskanencenter.org/democracy-fo...
And so the distrust of democracy among market-sympathetic liberal and conservative thinkers is a deep and pernicious mistake. It typically juxtaposes democratic decision-making to market decision-making, as if “democracy” were just a synonym for “politics” or “the state,” as if the contrast to “democratic” were “economic” rather than “autocratic.” We should sharply distinguish the question of how much the state ought to do from the question of how much democratic control of the state there ought to be, and thereby stop allowing market-liberal critiques of too much politics to be used as any kind of intellectual cover for the erosion of democratic government.

Given that markets emerge everywhere, we should ask some careful questions: On what terms does that happen? Who may benefit? To what degree? How do we fix things when market behavior hurts bystanders? How do we keep it from setting up unhealthy concentrations of power? Those are useful questions.

Market-congruent behavior happens in every offer to buy, sell, or barter. It's found in every social system, from fascism to communism to liberalism. It's found in prisons and concentration camps. Chimpanzees spontaneously exchange goods and services. The real choice is in how we channel it.

This is a digression, but it's come up a lot at @liberalism.org: Choosing between markets and democracy is not a choice that we can make. That's a category error--like thinking we have to choose between democracy and cooked food. Nope! There's no practical way to make that choice.

I'm not much of a video guy, but you should definitely watch this one. The choice is *always* between democracy and some form of authoritarianism. It's never between democracy and something you find nicer. It is never, as some libertarians have put it, a choice between democracy and free markets.
