New pub alert: Collaboration with our PhD students @ USC. We were interested in the practice of making a headshot of yourself via generative AI. It's you in the photo, but it's not a photo of you. People like the AI photos better, but don't like that they're AI. cyberpsychology.eu/article/view...

A research graphic shows matched headshots of the same woman: a real photograph on the left and an AI-generated version on the right. It reports that AI-generated photos received higher quality ratings, but labeling a photo as AI-generated reduced perceived quality. The preregistered experiment included 817 U.S. adults.

Even affects stuff that isn't exactly "high art." This summer I decided I wanted to watch old eps of Roseanne. All official channels have really bastardized it: it's cropped (lot of weird compositions as a result), scenes are chopped up to cut time for syndication, and it has a horrific AI upscale

TIL that the "journey" part of the word "journeyman" has nothing to do with travel. I always associated it with veteran athletes who often bounced from team to team on short-term deals (you might say journeyed!). But turns out "journey" is just anglicized French for "entire day"

I did a study that was really undermined by a failed manipulation. I look at the small number of past studies that did a very similar manipulation...and they just dropped the people who did not respond correctly to the manipulation check 🫣

BSky should improve the discover feed (but I praise them for making it or else I'd find the site unusable). Lots of low-quality/bot accounts here that get a ton of engagement. Endless supply of 30K follower + 30K following "TrumpMustGo2025"-style accounts that pump out stolen memes to much fanfare

TIL that when Blackboard shows you a student's overall grade as a percentage, it does *not* round, it truncates. So e.g. I had a student with 89.99 as shown in the UI...when I downloaded grades as CSV I saw they had 89.9975. Not the behavior I expected!

Had a student do a survey on Prolific that included the classic political knowledge question, "What job does J.D. Vance now hold?" Surprising number of "U.S. Senator from Ohio" responses that I doubt were people who knew the freshman senator but missed the part where he was elected VP

I'm at peace that my retirement account will contract and expand over time, presumably doing much more expanding than contracting over the long term. But it's kind of annoying that I'm legally obligated to keep putting money into it while it is obviously contracting
